Hi Performance LS400 mod... in the works!

just found this thread and after changing my air filter over the weekend i have a question...
With that opening to the left, are you not worried about water getting in during driving in heavy rain conditions?

JBrady,
Nice work! I had my 94 apart the other day & my mechanic wanted to mod the intake past the AFM in the portion before the Throttle Body.
On my 94 there is a hushbox with a rectangular opening beneath the intake conduit.
I would buy the heat shield from you if you decide to go into production.

Another angle on the modified housing. Notice that I retained the rectangular cold air intake insert retainer to hold the factory air feed box. This is a good source of cold air and serves several functions including sealing the engine compartment and a partial heat sheild for the air filter area. Also notice I retained the front mounting bolt bracket on the front of the housing. This supports everthing as factory and should be kept.

I know this is an old thread but I would have to see dyno results back to back before I hack up my intake. I doubt it makes any more than 5 horsepower. Until I see dyno numbers this is just another free mod to make cool noises!

It physically does NOT fit into the LS' engine bay, there isnt really anything more to add there. the 2LS actually has a SMALLER (lengthwise) engine bay than the 2GS because the GS engine bay was designed for a 2JZ inline 6, which is several inches longer than the 1UZ.

Wow, back from the grave...
I tested this at the racetrack back to back with a stock cover running 4 passes each way with a 1/2 mph increase in speed which is a clean 5 rwhp.
The GS400 uses a square/rectangular filter where the LS400 uses a round filter with more total filter area. The OEM LS400 filter is the best filter I am aware of for our cars, MUCH better IMO than the K&N as that has substancially less filter area.
Painting the parts with heat reflective resistent paint can't hurt.
Make certain to create good foam heat sealing parts.
I have driven my car this way for 100k miles at times in HEAVY rain and never had any problem. I think the shape of the headlight area blocks most of the water.
