Default Strange Snapping/Popping Noise when brakeing

Hey~
My 1994 LS has this very apparent snapping/popping sound fro the front end when i apply the brakes , and I did a test and noticed the sound occurs when I press the brakes moderately hard not when light braking. The sound happens it seems just once (after startup) it is not repititious but seems to be getting louder, It will just go pop/snap and this is generally at low speeds (like in a parking lot). The wheel is usually turned but not always, if that has anything to do with it. If anyone has some sort of idea on what could be causing this please post, I want to have an idea of what to expect before I head into Lexus.

Thank You,
Paul

its normal. i've heard stories from "its the brake doing a self check" to "it's the brakes warming up after sitting in the cold for a while". i have heard it on every single toyota car i have driven in my life, and probably most other brands. now if you had brakes that vibrated or squealed, that is a problem.

Default Cracking brakes

I had the same problem with mine especially when turning and braking. I replaced the slide pins (about $21 from the dealership) and bought a brake rebuild kit (about $15) which has the "shims" for the brake shoes to slide in and out on. They are little metal clips with a solid material on them for each caliper. They get worn and allow play to happen after awhile. The new "shims" have a solid surface on them that keeps the brake pads from making noise when they shift. The only noise I have now is when I go from reverse to forward. The pads shift to the other side and click a bit but not bad enough to be annoying.

Default Brake noises

I have a Lexus mechanic that used to live next door to me and he turned me on to the brake issues. We pulled the calipers off and found that the rubber boot that holds the grease in was cracked allowing moisture to seep in and corrode the slide pins. I replaced all of that and it was 100X better. Then I replaced the shims and springs (which all come in the kit) and it has fixed the problem entirely. Fortunately, not one of the expensive problems to remedy.
Good luck!

Default Brake kits and slide pins

I got them all from the dealership. I think the slide pins were around $20-$25 and the brake kit was fairly cheap as well. The boots came from my next door neighbor, but my guess is those would have been under $10. I would call the parts department at your dealership. Aftermarket parts for things like this are hard to find. I learned not to use the off the shelf Oil filter from the local auto parts store. Too short. The one from the dealership is much taller. So stick with the parts department on this one.

Thanks for the info. I ran into the same problem with the oil filter. Instead of going to the dealer to get the factory taller flter I just found another off the shelf filter that was taller but yet the same diameter and threading as the original filter. Ill post what model number I am using once i get home.
