Default Check engine light went on and turnd off next day

So last week my check engine light came on on Thursday afternoon. Car was running normal no hesitation, no change in performance what so ever. Was going to get it checked on Friday afternoon. But while i drove it on friday morning the check engine light went off. Could they still see what code it stored or do i have to wait till it comes back on, and the light hasn't come on since then, and car is still running smooth. any info would be appreciated.

but if its the o2 sensor doesnt it mean im running rich which will cause bad MPG.. and so far ive been getting good MPG at leas 20mpg city and 28mpg on the highway.. also found out my cats are smashed so there might be hole somewere could that cause the check engine light to come on. So since the check engine light went off, the code is still saved in its memory right?

The code should still be there... Cats are smashed? Do you gave an exhaust leak? That can throw a code and point to an oxygen sensor but by fixing the exhaust leak, it would go away.
