Exhaust pipe flange compression springs
Anyone know the purpose of compression springs on exhaust system flange bolts?

i believe since that part of the car does not utilize flex piping that the springs are there to essentially introduce some "flex" or "wiggle" as the pipes can move/pivot on the flange itself - which as you can see is not flat, but concave/convex to one another. the springs keep tension on the joint as to not allow leaks.
there is also that gasket which is usually called a donut gasket to help keep things flexible. i hope i explained that clearly!

Probably to try and reduce vibration. I don't think it does anything useful.
