What type of oil do you use? (The Mother thread)

I know, it seems crazy, until you read Motor Oil 101 at BobIstheOilGuy.com, where the world's oil gurus hang out
The greatest confusion is because of the way motor oils are labeled. It is an old system and is confusing to many people. I know the person is confused when they say that a 0W-30 oil is too thin for their engine because the old manual says to use 10W-30. This is wrong.

Increasing the pressure while using the same oil will increase the oil flow but increasing the pressure by increasing the oil thickness will result in less flow. It takes more pressure to move a thicker oil. When you go to a thicker oil the pressure goes up because of the increased resistance, and therefore reduction of flow. Because the pressure is higher sooner, the relief valve cuts in sooner. Flow will actually be less when the RPM is up and the flow is needed the most.
I can't wait until Toyota back-specs our LS400's for 5W-20 or even 0W-20

the thicker oil has an effect on sheering..nothing to do with pressure. they never will back spec these cars and what difference does It make..run whatever oil u want.
also why would they back spec on these cars which run over 300,000 miles regularly? if it aint broke.....

If you use Pennzoil Platinum here's an oil deal for you. Oreilly has a "buy 5 quarts of synthetic with a Bosch filter for $34.95" deal going this week. They have a $10 Oreilly card rebate on the deal which you can use twice. On top of that, Pennzoil will give you a $1/gal price break on Shell gasoline at participating stations on up to 20 gallons of fuel. http://www.pennzoil.com/promotions/#&panel1-1
So you throw down $70 for 10 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum and you get 2 $10 Oreilly Cards and two trips to a Shell station saving a buck/gallon on up to 20 gallons. Basically, that's about $60 maximum back into your pocket.

If anybody is interested in 90915-20004 filters please let me know. I won't be needing them the way it is going.

It is a long drain interval oil, carries BMW, Benz, VW approvals. European origined. 'Rare'.
Just got, for the first time, Castrol 0W-40 oil for $25 from WM. 5qt bottle. Next I will try that.
I change oil rarely before 8k miles, most of the time I change after 10k miles if I drove mostly highway.

again, all of you fellows debating this really need to stop and take 10 minutes and read Motor Oil 101 at BobIsTheOilGuy.com - it will dispel all of these old myths about how thicker oil is better, and uses science from petroleum and automotive engineering to explain it where even non-engineers can understand!

There is a difference between oil viscosities recommended and used in US and Europe. Where 5W-30 is put in just about any vehicle on your side of the big pond the 5W-40 has been the mostly used viscosity as long as I can remember. The newer cars of course get thinner oils also here.
