40W oils and "high mileage" oils are not recommended, unless your LS400 has some serious wear, like over 300,000 miles or blowing blue smoke, etc.

Mine is around the 300,000 mile mark, that's why I switched to a high mileage synthetic.

I use the same oil as I do in my MazdaSpeed 6, Rotella t6 5w-40

Been using it on my turbo car for 70k and still have the stock turbo and my oil pressure and turbo seals are rock solid.

I also use every 15k Polydyn TX7. Most of the engine additives are snake oil. This is the one of the few that don't use Teflon which is an engine killer because teflon will build up and clog your oil passages. It's hard to find but liquid gold as far as i'm concerned. Used it for over a decade in all of my vehicles, sports car or just a daily commuter and never have bearing issues ever.

http://www.polydyn.com/tx7.htm

A testiment to this oil and additive combo, when i still had the cartridge style filter for my mazda some oil change place tightened down the plastic cartridge too much and had a hairline crack but would only spu oil when under a load. So I didn't notice it for nearly 2000 miles, who knows how long i was running at just over a quart of fluid and I drive my car hard. This happened 40k ago and as far as i can tell didn't affect a thing.

Not debating, just FYI:

My LS is an original German market car. The following chart is in the owner's manual

I believe we did not have 5W-30 oils available back in the early 90s over here so these have been driven with either 10W40 or 5W40.

My current fill is Shell Helix Ultra 5W40.

Never seen that one before, T6 is a full synthetic, i wonder what the difference is between the two?

Based on what I have been reading on Bobistheoilguy.com this Shell Helix Ultra is more or less the same product as Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40.

I'm under impression that Shell markets certain oils only under Pennzoil brand in US and vice versa. We do not have for example T6 available over here at all.

You can find Shell Helix Ultra PDS for example here.

no doubt Mobil 1 is very good oil, back in 1990's, it was the best oil - whether it is currently the "best" is much less clear nowadays, it has a lot of new high-tech competition that best it on the new and used oil analysis, but it is still an excellent choice, just no longer the only great oil.

0W-30
5W-20

Apart from 5W-40 Shell Helix Ultra is available as

5W-30 as Shell Helix Ultra Extra (low SAPS)
0W-30 as Shell Helix Ultra AV (VAG specific)
0W-30 as Shell Helix Ultra AS (GM specific)
0W-30 as Shell Helix Ultra AF (Ford specific)
etc.

and

0W-40 as Shell Helix Ultra

I have not seen it available as 0 or 5W-20.

In general Shell lubricants are not used that much as this has been Mobil country since the Stone Age or so.

Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 is what I have been and will continue to run until either I move somewhere colder or a better group IV synthetic becomes available at the same price-point.

UOA between Rotella T6 and super expensive German Castrol Syntec revealed minimum differences after ~8-10k miles.

Has anybody tried running ENEOS? I'm thinking about giving that a go. Mobil 1 is usually $8-$10 per quart and the ENEOS is about $6-$7 per quart. Also gonna be putting a Denso filter on next oil change.

Changed the oil today and put in Mobil 1 0W-40 and WIX WL7172 filter.

It seems that Euro-spec cars (at least my 1991 does) have a different oil filter bracket and some filter manufacturers list different filters for Euro vs. US cars. I'm thinking about ordering a case of 90915-YZZD3 filters be done with the matter.

different oil filter bracket?

yes ENEOS is awesomely great oil!

the 90915-YZZD3 is a pretty wimpy filter, if you are going to run a Toyota/Denso, run the 90915-20004 (made in Japan) that came with the car and made LS400/Celsior's reputation for durability!
