Meh, they say stick with it because they want your business, Personally I think you should find something you like though and stick with it.
I don't like regular syn power much but they do make a good high mileage synthetic

alot of the information posted is either outdated, incorrect, or hearsay.
what oil you want depends solely on how much you're willing to spend.
there is a big difference in the performance of a conventional oil (petro base stock, gr1/2) and a synthetic (gr3, based on mineral bases mixed with PAO), and a "true" synthetic, synthesized off of pure PAO basestock.
i've run 5w-30 mobil1 for a long time, with good filters, and have a relatively clean motor even with the long intervals i run (~6-8k miles)
in the next couple days though i'm making the jump to 0w-30 German Castrol Syntec (gold or green, i'll find out in the next day or so) with a Bosch (or oem) filter (depends on what i have laying around in my supply cabinet)

Here is the list for 1FZ-FE Land Cruiser 4.5L I6
1) Mobil 1 0w-40. This is a great oil, but some have had high consumption with it, others can't find it.
2) Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 (Formerly Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40). I know that it says Diesel, ignore that part. It is relabeled Mobil Delvac 1, and designed as a fleet oil (gas and diesel engines). Many believe that this is the best oil in the Mobil 1 lineup.
3) Castrol 0w-30 aka German Castrol (THIS OIL APPEARS DISCONTINUED SO LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE BOTTLES BEFORE YOU BUY). You have to be careful with this one as there are two versions, a US made Group III and a German Made Group IV oil. If you want to run this one you have to look carefully at the back of the bottle for those magic words "Product of Germany" or "imported from Germany". The back will also carry BMW LL-01, MB 229.3 and 229.5 approvals.
4) Shell Rotella T 5w-40 Synthetic. This is a group III oil that has turned in consistently good results at bobistheoilguy.com. It is the value leader of the bunch when you can get it at Walmart for $12.88 per gallon. If you have to buy it at $5.00 a quart, buy one of the others above.
5) Mobil 1 Hi Mileage 10w-40. This is a newcomer and availability has been sparse but it should be a great choice and work well when it can be found.
6) Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-30. MAKE SURE IT IS THIS EXACT MOBIL 1 10W-30 SINCE THEY HAVE 3 DIFFERENT VERSIONS. Yes, I know that I said no Mobil 1 30 weight oils, so why this one? This one, like the German Castrol, is formulated on the heavy end of the 30 weight scale and meets ACEA A3 specs (HTHS of 3.6).

Driver School Candidate
The PO ran Mobil 1 and changed it every 2 thousand miles.. I cannot understand why, a waist, but good for me. I have used it in other vehicles and never had one problem with any engine I had. But I have heard of many who use regular oil with similar results. I guess it is a mind thing. Just change it when called for.

a minor correction, the German Castrol isn't discontinued, and can be found in autozones depending on how lucky you are. only difference as far as most people can tell is that the oil isn't green anymore, but gold. otherwise seems the same/better

7schulz, good to see another cruiser owner on the lexus forum. This forum from what i have found is not even close to the "mud" forum. But, helpful none-the-less. Even Rugster is on here, except he's not spouting political ramblings....
I have been running the M1 in my motor. I think that is what one of the oil experts on "mud" informed me was the best for this motor. So far i am happy with that choice. I also run Wix oil filter. JMHO.

As tested by an independant lab.
http://www.amsoil.com/graphs/sso_4ball_large.gif . I normally wouldn't put too much trust in the graph either, but this is the company who brought synthetic to the automotive world. The Amsoil did great in the graph, but I was more surprised at how terrible the Mobile1 did. I also would like to see Amsoil v.s. Royal Purple as I think that would be a good comparison. I have used royal purple 5w-30 for the last two oil changes and feel a slightly better pull when accelerating and smoother idle than the others I have used, Mobile1 5w-30, Lucas 5w-30, Quakerstate 5w-30.
