Hi, so Ive got a 94 LS400, I really like it, but the gauges console is often completely black when I start the car and then flickers to lit when it wants, usually 1-5minutes after being on. What are the best options to do this, because getting a whole new panel is quoted at $500.

So I tried to fix this myself. Was able to solder things fine. However when I soldered c212 I didn't put it in an angle and when I tried to put the cover back on it seems I ripped the cap and the contacts out, as you can see in the picture. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this giant f*#@ up.
I am going to the junkyard this weekend and hope I can find a 93/94 with the cluster still in it.

You are not going to find a cluster from a junk yard, I can assure you. Your best bet is to find a contact point using amp-meter and re-solder. Cluster is a surface mount so the soldering is not an easy work.

Don't worry. Solder the new capacitor to the lands indicated by the red circle + and the black circle - after removing the surface coating

I had the same problem with my cluster going black for a few seconds 45 to 60. Replaced the caps on both boards,1994 LS400, great fix. Yes their are clusters to find. I got one at Pull place for a 1994 LS400. Got it for the needles, pointers on my were going dim. Only paid $27.78 plus tax. I guess I was Lucky to find one, just keep looking.Oh by the way replacing Caps Will fix many other cluster problems, gas gauge, speedo, lights around the interior of car, many more to list. Try it you will be Happy With the results!!!!!! Dont forget the transistor 109.Change it to.

For 93-94 LS400 owners, I recommend to use following capacitors for your cluster fix.

For C212 10/16V,
http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...37CT-ND/817534

For C142 4.7uF/25V,
http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...41CT-ND/817538

For C147 10uF/50V,
http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...43CT-ND/817540

Above those costs less than $2 totally. The shipping cost may be more than that. I recommend you to change the ECU capacitors if not done yet buying all capacitors for it too at the same time.

Just bought a 1995 with same issue. Anyone know if they are the same?

Update:

They are NOT the same. The newer 1995 model doesn't use any SMD caps at all, they're all round can with two legs thru the PCB.

I've ordered new caps in these flavors and quantity:
(Name brand low ESR caps not the cheap stuff)

1x 50V@10uf
2x 50V@4.7uf
2x 50V@1uf

2x 25V@820uf
1x 25V@470uf
2x 25V@47uf

1x 10V@470uf
1x 10V@180uf
