Default Buying an older (92 - 94) LS 400

I commute about 130 miles a day and for the last 5 years have been doing so in a '92 LS400. During this time I have pushed the mileage to 250K. The valves are getting a bit noisy and there are some other items (struts, LED temp readout, etc.) that over time have worn out. I really don't want to put more $ into a car with this many miles on it. I am looking to buy another early 90's LS. During the time I have had my car I have replaced the alternator, both front A frames, and the rear main seal. I was wondering if this is typical LS400 history. And are there other problem areas for this era of the LS's. I have talked with a few other owners, and the A frames and the alternator (due to a power steering leak) seem to be the major items I have found. I love the LS, any help would be appreciated. And if you know of a 92 - 94 LS with less than 90K for around 10K, please let me know. Thanks

Look like your're pretty much fixed all the comon problems for the 1st gen LS. I think the 95 or 96 would be nice with good service records and good body.

Yeah, I would spend a little more money and get a '95+...they did over 200 changes/upgrades from the '90-'94 LS400's... I've seen some '95's for less than $16K with 80K miles on 'em...

Jebeda,

If you want to see what ebay motors has, whatever city a vehicle is in may have someone in clublexus who could recommend a good mechanic to check it out for you. Last time I looked on ebay motors, there were a lot of LS's for sale, all around the country. Most come with a limited warranty now (1 month, 1,000 miles) http://listings.ebaymotors.com/aw/pl...ml?col=3&dir=1 Be sure to check out previous comments on the seller.

Good Luck,

rhlight

For Ls400, 93&94 model year were rated to be the most reliable.

Default Early LS-12 basically trouble-free years

I have a '90 LS with only 75k miles. I too have replaced the alternator (because of leaky ps pump), both front A frames, and a/c compressor (warranty)---but that is ALL it has needed. On the interior the temp. LED has been unreadable for the last 3 years and the subwoofer went out.

I am casually looking for a newer one--'99-'00---at a good price. I have found Autotrader a good price guide as to what is out there and have actually purchased 4 cars (including a '02 IS) on ebay in the last 2 years for way below what they were locally.

All-in-all, I've had much more trouble with much newer Mercedes and I'll stick with the LS too.

For first gen, go 93 or 94.
