Default Headliner Removal, rattling from behind your head

I dropped my headliner for several reasons yesterday. For one I could hear rattling from behind my head, putting my hand on the headliner right behind me would cure the sound... Secondly I could see the headliner clips along the back window had separated. I thought the two might be related but once I got in there I found the real problem...

At the back of sunroof track inside the drip pan there is a clip riveted to the plastic that holds the back of the track on. The rivet had broken causing the clip to rattle against the track... I tried to use rivets to fix it but it would have required dropping the whole assembly and removing the sunroof racks so I used a bolt instead. I grabbed a few pictures of the whole thing that I'll post.. I could never find good pics of what everything looked like above the headliner..

I also blew out my drains while I was in there and fixed the sagging headliner. And then DISASTER STRUCK... I was humming along putting things together and I cracked my sunroof glass... So I'm looking for that BTW ASAP! If you have a spare let me know...

The second pic down is back of the track with the clip taken out... that's where the rattle was coming from...

Thanks for sharing!

I guess the sunroof glass isn't tempered?

I was being stupid and was using the glass as a lever point for a clip puller and put way too much pressure on one spot... I just wasn't thinking

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your bad luck! Trust me all of us that work on our own cars have done stuff just like that. I know I sure have when right after it breaks you say to yourself how could I have been so stupid? Lol I feel your pain. I once dropped an Allen wrench inside my bell housing and had to drop the tranny to get it out. Good luck!

Yah you can see them... the easy way to find them is to poor water on the roof and it'll puddle up under the drains... The front ones come down around the steering rack IIRC, the rear ones I'm not sure of... just poor water in and watch I suppose... A good way to get water back there is to park on hill, put the roof part way in and poor water onto the glass... that will get the water to run back to the drain lines...

thanks... It seems to happen on most big jobs I do... I do 95% correct and then screw something up that takes an extra couple of hours to fix...

i wouldnt put the headliner back til after you fixed that...its going to be a pain since you have to take the entire assy. off before replacing the glass.

I don't know about Gen 2 but on the Gen one you don't have to take anything out to replace the glass... Just two trim pieces covering 6 nuts... it's simple as simple as putting air in your tires... unless of course you break the glass trying to pry off one of the trim pieces...

Sorry - reading at work - so did your rattle get remedied by tightening a support? I have the same damn rattle and it drives me nuts.

The rear support for the sunroof track is a metal bracket that is riveted to the drain pan (plastic) which is right over the pass seat cushion area. I replaced it with a nut/blot because I got impatient with the rivets...

BTW I'm still in need of sunroof glass

I too have the annoying rattle. I wish here was an easier fix than taking off the entire headliner which I am kind of hesitant to do...

It's not that bad... I've done alot of audio work though so disassembling the interior is something I feel comfortable with and is generally error free... if it wasn't for the fact that I got a little careless at the end and if I had the objective of fixing this in the first place it would have been 2-3 hours tops...
