crunching noise
i have a loud crunching squeaking noise coming from the front passanger wheel area. took it to a mechanic and they say its both the upper and lower ball joints. Does this sound right because i have read in other posts that other mechanics have said the same thing but it didnt fix the problem. I just hate to go and spend 1000 dollars to fix these things if thats not whats going on. I have alot of play in the steering and the popping and squeaking noise is louder when i turn the wheel. i really need help!! I live on very bad roads and i hear that could make the balljoints go out. i have 152000 miles on my car if u need to know that and its a 91.

I drove a 90 LS from new until 183,500 miles when I sold it. By the time I got to 152,000 miles, all the front ball joints had been replaced due to sloppy handling and noise -- and I drove it on mostly smooth roads. Your mechanic is probably right.
