This is 100% city. Highway can be anywhere from 21-28 in this car.
It's also a 1UZ.

two tanks have given almost the same MPG..
2000 LS with 151k on the clock.
Fresh plugs, throttle body cleaning.
27.6 and 26.8 hand calculated...she didn't check the computer
Daily driver back and forth to work 13 miles each way with 8 on the freeway and the rest residential
Not bad for an old V8... I'd drive that over a Honda any day...

For what its worth, my '90 LS400 is giving me consistently 17.5mpg in mixed city/highway (more city, and usually short trips, so not ideal situation). Plus, the "highway" is mostly very steep hills, nothing straight or level... When I rented a new Camry which is rated at 35mpg hwy it was giving me barely 24mpg in the same conditions.
I'd like to see better than that, but considering this is California gasoline, and short trips, and all, I am probably doing OK.
However, I have not replaced the spark plugs or wires or anything electrical yet, so maybe there is some space for improvement. We'll see.

I just have to keep reminding myself that while the MPG blows on this car, I've been driving it for 2.5 years now. Every day for the first year, I kept worrying about the car breaking me financially.
It hasn't happened yet. I had an opportunity to drive a 2009 Corolla back from Vegas a couple weeks back(about a 2 hour drive, uphill). Had the base model w/ 4 speed auto. The thing did great on fuel, but the engine was noisy and I had to keep my foot into the pedal to maintain 80 mph on the freeway. My LS400 does that drive with the cruise on at 75-80 and never kicks down into 3rd.

First of all, I know I am resurrecting a thread but I had to share this with you guys. Yesterday, I made a trip from Pensacola, FL to Nashville, TN in my LS400. I stopped in Brewton, AL at the Walmart to fill up a full tank of 89 octane (mid grade) and reset my trip meter while I was at it. Upon arriving in Nashville, I was SHOCKED to find that the Lexus was able to achieve 31.8MPG!!! I believe the reason this was possible is I had my cruise control set on ~62MPH the entire ~390 miles. Nothing special is done to the car, its a 97 LS with around 285,000 miles, I have a K&N air filter. Has anyone heard anything about anyone getting this good of mpg with a LS before? It seriously got better gas mileage than the Chevy Sonic I drove down to Pensacola two weeks ago.

If you don't check your speedometer with a GPS to verify actual miles driven and actual speed how can you even estimate mpg? Never trust the info from the info center unless you have verified it is correct. I have seen the speed indicated off by 5-10% so your actual miles driven will reflect that. Fill up, mark the mileage down, at the next fill up note miles driven and the gas you just put in the tank. Divide the gallons into the miles, adjust if you have speedo error % and now you have true MPG! Tire wear, inflation, tire brand, and general wear will affect your speedo reading.

Also the AC/bad mileage thing is just a myth... sure it MAY take 1mpg off but not much more.

I agree... there is something wrong with those numbers... my Tundra does better than that, city driving.

97 LS400 150k miles
Every time I fill up I use 91 octane like I should and I get about 23.4 - 24.6 MPG with an even 50/50 city/highway mix. I was thinking about adding an intake to further improve my gas consumption.

Hey all. Due to a budgeting mishap on my bi-weekly checks I ended up having to let my car get to E for the first time in my life. I have religiously since I was 16 years old never let any of my 6 cars get below a quarter tank. And normally I fill up at a half tank.
Anyways, on one tank of Shell V-Power premium I got 530 miles and when I filled up I put in $76 and 19.2 gallons.
Am I right in assuming this car has a 22 gallon tank? If so why did the light come on right at 500 miles with more than 3 gallons left?
So, I managed to get 27 mpg with my non vvt-i which I think is freaking great for a V8. Not to mention I do a fair amount of stop and go. I am constantly amazed at this car.

MPG for around town...
Hey guys I have finally solved by power issues and I have a very smooth and powerful car, but I am still thinking my mpg is a little low.
I have a 93 with 35k on it, and I have changed a lot. Fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, coolant temperature sensor, main oxygen sensors (not the subs), changed to synthetic Mobil 1 oil, no codes coming out...
However around town (which is 90% of my driving) and averaging about 30mph for most of it, I'm averaging about 15mpg per tank. I don't drive hard, and I'm beginning to think that it is just because of the slow city driving. I haven't done any consistent hwy driving so I can't tell you what I'm getting there... but I'm certain it's much more. I know the EPA says 18mpg city, and I figure that I should be getting at least another 1-2 mpg more.
My question is, does this seem low or for the speed is this about right. I'm not concerned about it, but I like my car running purrrrfect.
