106K on 1991 LS400 - Timing Belt?
I bought the car with 57K on it on 2003. It now haas 106K and the timimg belt has never been touched to my knowledge.
I am going to drive car another 12K before I seel it. Should I spend the $1100 or not?

I wouldn't spend the money if you are going to sell it so soon. The 1991 as I understand is a non-interference engine. That means if the belt breaks, there is no other damage than a car that won't run. Later models toast the motor if the belt breaks.

Right now,, you're on borrowed time, as Thermactor has stated, belt age/wear are factors. If you plan on keeping it, then yes a timing belt is now in order. If you plan to sell it, then make a decision on ifyou want ot replace or not. I would find a trusted mechanic to do the work or even do so yourself if you are mechanically inclined. Saves you some money and will keep you in good spirits with the potential buyer if you do not disclose that the car will need one soon.

why you going to sell it when it isnt worth much? if you were to put that 1100 into it it would easily run another 100k trouble-free miles , I say throw some rims and tint on it and ride it. just my .02 cents though

I had 130K on mine when I changed it and it had only minimal wear so I'd bet the belt would go another 12K on yours with no problem. The belt is the beefiest I'd seen on any car. Roll the dice and go for it and hope the next owner doesn't ask.

I read on here one guy went 140,000 before his timing belt broke.
Register your VIN at Lexus.com and see your repair history, maybe belt was changed just before you bought it. Also, a decal comes with the belt, and some dealers and most indie mechanics put it near the front radiator with date and mileage belt was replaced. My dealer doesnt because he says the work is in the computer database that any dealer or current registered owner can see.
I have heard reports the 90,91 engine will go 500,000 miles, and you own a classic. Read about your car by Googling "Lexus wiki"

I have 140k on my belt right now & have no intentions of changing it soon.....
I had a long talk with a Lexus mechanic who has been doing this for years....straight up & off the record from him......."the Toyota timing belts will do 200k"...these belts have kevlar in them........He did qualify his statement & indicated that the other parts would not last that long......water pump, & idler bearings......he said that people change out their tensioner but doesnt know why......they dont go bad.....unless they leak......very rarely has he seen one leak.....
90-94 LS400 are non-interference engines......belt breaks......no problem....just leaves you stranded

I'm at 124,000 and plan on going another 6K to make it an even 130K. I then plan on doing everything required since nothing has been done except fluids at 85K.
I'm thinking T-Belt, water pump, drive belt, plugs, wires, PS Pump, PS Lines, Throttle Body Cleaning, coolant tank(has slow leak), valve cover gaskets, all fluids, I also need Tires, front brakes, brake master cly(bleeds down sometimes), and right rear axle (I found it slung grease 40K miles ago).
Did I miss anything? Wow sounds like I've got allot of work ahead of me, now you know why I'm putting it off until 130,000

timing belt
My 2 cents as well rool the dice. My 2nd car the water pump leaked 3 weeks ago. I had it replaced and also replaced the timing belt It was not its 1st. ( I bought this car as a parts car but my wife took it) My other 94 LS I bought new & the timing belt has never been changed. it has 125000. Im rolling the dice. If it brakes then I'll have it fixed. Lastly I had a supra it ran great till I had the belt changed. It never ran rite after the dealer replaced it. Roll the dice..

Must Lexus owners have it imbedded from the dealer to change everything at every 90k. It is a money maker for them....for those that go to the dealer.....when the time comes, I believe a high quality belt from Toyota is the key......these belts will last.....made by MBL & are OEM....can be had for 54.00............replace with high quality water pump & idler bearings.......tensioner is fine unless it leaks.....
www.autohausaz.com has Lexus OEM parts for less money than I have seen anywhere.....
So if you want to go ahead & replace at 90k fine.....by I am a proponent for holding off as long as you feel comfortable.....but keep in mind that is just one man's opinion.....

Another tidbit from the veteran Lexus mechanic I talked to at length.....
If you timing belt breaks, you will lose all power to your car ( most of us probably already know that ) , so one has three brake applications to get the car stopped. He said most people panic & pump the brakes rather quickly....no, no, no......the brake booster has about enough vacuum for three brake applications......apply brakes & keep consistent pressure on the pedal...never pump the brakes....you will lose the vacuum...just thought I would pass that on to those that may wait until belt breaks.....could be me.....could be you......
