Stock headunit. When i turn it on, and turn it up, it gets distorted and the headunit shuts off. any ideas?

Here's a good one: It's 15 years old, time for a new one. Mine did the same thing until it wouldn't come on anymore. I bought a nice aftermarket head unit, wiring harness from Crutchfield.com (so I didn't have to cut the factory one) and a stock appearing mounting bracket from ebay. Altogether I paid just under $100 bucks for everything and my tunes sounds great.
