Default automatic transmission delay in engagement

Am experiencing transmission delay engagement of one-half minute to
two minutes after shifting from Park to Drive on MY LS400 2000 model vehicle especially on cold start.
By the way no delay when shifting only to Reverse.
The problem is more prevalent in colder weather, and usually
occurs during a ``cold start'' such as after the vehicle has been
parked with the engine off overnight. Normally i increase the engine speed in order to reduce the delay
time.
When transmission fully engage then i don't have any other problems with it.

I had recently changed the transmission fluid with toyota T-IV ATF + Transmission Oil Stainer , but still having the same problem.

Could some help me! Any one have the same issue before with his vehicle.

Just a thought but what is your cold idle at, some transmissions if the rpm's are too hight wont shift into drive to protect the trans. I don't know if this is true for the LS

This is a serious symptom. If the car is driving normally once warm, then we can rule out all the simple things like the cable adjustment, the selector rod adjustment, etc. The manual directs you to the forward clutch. This may be a mechanical issue (smell/color of ATF after your fresh change has had a while to know your transmission), or it may be a hydraulic control issue in the valve body or pump output.

I would start by getting a good honest reading of the fluid level, check color/smell/foaming as well. If the level is good and the fluid remains sweet and translucent, you may be dealing with an obstruction in the path to the forward apply piston. And I am no automatic transmission rebuilder, so what you are getting here is a keyboard Lexus Manual poseur.

(that BMW link reminds me of the little boo-boo that had with the ZF automatic where smog tests were blowing out transmissions all over the place. Turns out that it is a very bad idea to rev your engine in neutral, it burns out the forward apply clutch pack due to insufficient oil pressure, because . . . . . . . the oil pump was on the output side of the transmission and needed the vehicle to be in motion to build pressure. Or sumpin')

i had rough/hard idle 1500 rpm on cold start since i had sometimes CEL on with DTC P0430 because of exhaust leak. I did not got time to get it this fixed.
I think maybe you have a point here since am sure my problem started at same time when i got P0430.
I will try to fix this exhaust leak & will check how it will go.
I will post again soon.

While i was going to replace the Exhaust pipe gasket on passenger side after cat one.
i noticed that the old gasket is similiar to this one in this photo

But the part which i got its number from T O Y O D I Y .com (17451 - 50020 ) is having different look it is like donut gasket.
Am confused now what is goin on here any ideas guys?

I had replaced the Exhaust pipe gasket "flat type gasket" on passenger side after cat one. And cleared the DTC code P0430. Scanned car again in few days and am not getting any DTC code. I am still having the automatic transmission delay in engagement on cold start. What could i do? Any help!
Kansas if you have any idea about this, could you post it here.

until today not getting any DTC codes or CEL, but still having automatic transmission delay in engagement.

It is Very Annoying Problem, could you guys help me!

Go to this website

Then hit the icon that says "technical articles" on the left side

then go to the one that says "toyota series - Automatic transmission"

Then in go the the appendix (AT13)

The appendix has a trouble shoot diagnostics tree. (page 203)

Hope this helps. I would also read the other articles so you better understand the tranny to help diagnose the problem

According to the troubleshoot sheet I mentioned you have an issue with the holding device if it takes longer than 1.5 seconds to engage. Of course this assumes that you first did the other checks it mentions.


Holding Device - Hydraulically operated bands, multiplate clutches, multiplate brakes and mechanically operated one way clutches that hold members of the planetary gear set.

Another thing that it could be. When the fluid is cold the fluid is thicker. If your solenoid filter is clogged or partially clogged when it is cold you will not get enough pressure but with time it will build up and then eventually get the needed pressure hence the delay. Once the fluid is warmed up the fluid can flow more easily though the clogged filter (I am talking the filter at the solenoid not in the sump) and then the car acts more normal. Hope this is the issue instead of the clutches or bands.

i had a similar problem with my previous 91 LS400 where on a cold start in the morning the car would reverse but when i shift it in drive, it wouldn't engage. i would then shift from reverse to drive several times and several minutes later i would feel the transmission engage. i used auto rx and the problem went away up until the day i sold it about a year later... i think my problem was the bands but who knows... all i know is that it perfectly fine after!
