Default Starter problem?

Everytime I try to turn on my 1994 LS 400, I just hear ONE click. It is not even attempting to fire up. I tried jumping it but no dice. I am guessing it is the starter. I tried to call a few shops some said $800, 750, and 500. They were saying it is located under the intake manifold so the labor costs shot way up. From my diagnostics, do you guys think it is the starter? I don't know much about cars so I don't wanna order parts for the wrong problem. Thank you.

This has been covered in depth a number of times along with may DIYs.

Your mechanic is correct about the location of the starter. It is a labor intensive job.

I am new to forums, I am not sure what DIYs mean, but I just called a Vietnamese place up and spoke to them in the language and they cut me a deal for $295 total. The race card has never been so useful until now.

$295 is a great price for a starter replacement. hope its a good shop or it will jsut give u a lot more problems later on.

Welcome to the forum!!

The search being alluded to is the Search link that allows you to search for keywords in various threads (topics/messages). Back out of this thread and you'll see a Search link at the top of the message index. Cick it and type "starter", this will show you all the threads that have the word starter in it.

Click on them and read up on the subject (research) to get a better understanding of what's involved with your starter issue. I went through this a little over a year ago. You'll see some of my posts when you do your search.

Welcome - the price you were quoted is very cheap - as long as they can get the car back together I would seriously consider it. I paid just South of $1,000 to get mine replaced (twice now).

Ever heard the adage, "if it sounds too good to be true, it is?" I'm speaking because I'm half-Viet and know the culture.

They might just replace the contacts, and if that's true, make sure they dry-fire the starter motor BEFORE they put it back in. I've seen some pretty stupid mechanics out there.

i agree with you avalon, my mechanic has done this mistake, but i did not paid him twice, but for sure i waste alot of my time with him.

i had ended with buying new starter.

so make sure to advice your mechanic, since he is not expert.
