Default Tires rubbing

Quik question for the peeps with airbags and slammed LS. Did you have to remove the plastic from underneath the front fender and the windshield fluid container so it doesn't rub? I want to lower mine more but right now it rubs sometimes when the steering wheel is turned all the way but in reverse. If I lower it any more it might rub to much. I have 245/35/20 in the front but don't want to go smaller. What you guys think?

you need to run a smaller tire. 225/35-20 on up to a 9j is still within spec and gives it JUST that little extra clearance. at least on a 2nd gen LS. 245/35-20 is way out of spec for your '91 with its stock 15"s.

Is going to a smaller tire the only option or can I just get rid of the plastics. If I remove the plastics from under the front fenders, will it create problems. I'm trying to avoid going to a lower profile. I like to have some rubber around my rim.

225/35-20 isnt lower profile, in fact it's the same aspect ratio (35) as the tires you have now. the difference is that the TINY difference in outside diameter (of ~0.6 in.) is JUST ENOUGH such that the tires wont rub the inner fender liner when you turn.

Oh I get it. The tire would be a lil more narrower and would give me more clearance when turning. It makes sense cause it barely touches right at the edge of the tire at full turn. Cool. Thanks. I've owned this car for about 6 months and love it. It just needs a little tlc to be perfect. I thought about selling it and getting a 1GS but I like the sound &torque of the v8. It it's so smooth.

uhh no its not the width of the tire that directly affects your rubbing situation, it's the fact that the overall diameter of a tire is based upon a relation between its Rim size (ie-16/20/34/etc..), width in mm, and Aspect Ratio.

dont believe me? multiply your tire width (in mm) by your aspect ratio (ie-0.35, no 35) and you'll have your sidewall height in mm.

there are 2 ways (other than changing wheel size) to reduce the overall diameter of a tire, either reduce its aspect ratio (keeping width constant) which will give you a thinner sidewall, or reduce its width (keeping aspect ratio constant) which will reduce the side wall as well, but since you only need a minute change and the bigger "35" series sidewall reducing the width by 20mm while leaving the aspect ratio the same will cause a smaller decrease in sidewall height, which is all you (should) need anyways.

a 30 series tire with the same sidewall as your 245/35-20 would be ~285mm wide, wayyyy too wide for the front of your car.

Exactly. Going to a 225/35 will make it a little narrower and the profile a tiny bit lower. Giving me more clearance. Will it give me a slight stretch. The 245/35 right now is right on the lip.

yeah, its the "correct" 20" set for a 9j wheel in 35 aspect ratio.

225/30-20 on a 9j will be super stretched, and only usable if you live in an area with VERY smooth roads.

Yeah. Here in Florida the roads are very smooth. Thank God. So you think I should go with a 225/30 or 225/35

Or just keep the same 245/35 and just remove all the plastics from under the fender cause that's where it's rubbing.

even if you remove the inner liner you will probably still rub on the driver's side on the windshield wiper reservoir.

i'm a fan of having as much sidewall as possible to protect the wheel, if you only need a 225/35-20 stretch, no real point to getting 225/30-20.

i always remove my liners. the only real consequence would be if you are much lower than you are on df210s and rubbed through the wiring harness. other than that you get some dirt in your jams but that can be avoided if you take the time to trim the liners down.

225/35 on a 9 is far from a super stretch.

every size mentioned in this thread is significantly larger o.d. than stock. even a 215/30 is, but you really don't want to run that unless you are committed to being super low at all times.

sounds like you are rubbing under compression, tire to fender. the low spring rate is probably to blame. more info on widths/offsets and plans to "lower it more" would help in making a recommendation.
