1999 Ls 400 - Engine Shaking - Engine bushings? Good Mechanic In Scottsdale/phx Area?
Hi All,
I sold the LS430 I used to have and recently bought a 1999 LS400 with 126k miles. The timing belt had been done, it had all the records and the Nav had even been updated to 9/2003 (lol).
It had a slight shake in the steering wheel when I bought it but I thought that was just the alignment or tires out of balance. I got the tires balanced, but that did not fix it. I was jump starting my other car when I noticed that at various RPM's the engine was shaking like crazy, and that would shake the steering wheel (even when sitting still). Is this a simple motor mount issue or something worse? The engine sounds OK, but I am not certain, there is a slight belt squeek or something I am hearing. Is it just the engine bushings that need to be replaced, perhaps? I see a DIY here but I am not that mechanical.
Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in Scottsdale/PHX area who won't rip me off because it is a Lexus? Perhaps even gives free estimates?
Thanks!

I had this exact problem. I could feel a strong shake in the steering wheel and shifter **** while reving in park. It turned out to be the transmission mount. $40 part, 20 mins of work.

Only 20 mins of work? Nice! I hope it is just the tranny and not the engine mounts too, but I can see the engine surges when the engine is rev'd, so I think it might be both. Thanks for responding, black_LS!

It's real simple. Lift up the front of the car and put it on jack stands. Use a jack to support the transmission by the oil pan (put a piece of wood in between). Undo a few bolts, remove the bracket, replace the mount, and do them back up.

Contact Kyoei USA, the owner is a fellow member and LS owner. He will check out the car and give you an estimate for free. His rates are more than fair . He's done work for fellow CL members and plenty can vouch for him, including me.

Now I am beginning to wonder if it is the transmission mount at all (it looked kind of OK to me, what do you think?), or if it is the engine mount. I have attached pictures, please let me know your your opinions are. Sorry, it was dark out, I don't have a jack, I had to put it up on a curb and crawl underneath:
Here are some pics of the front right engine bushing, I can't tell at all from this angle:
And, if I may ask, does anyone know what is this leaking, does it matter? I was laid off my job in June and can't afford much anymore:
Thanks!!

Hi,
Could someone kindly provide me with the part #s for the motor mounts (front and rear) as well as the transmission mount for a '99 LS400?
I tried searching the park place auto parts site and was only able to find the Front mount and the Rear mount -- but I couldn't find any search results for the Transmission mount.
Also, if I were to bring this to an independent to perform the change, do I need to purchase the mount brackets?.. I presume not, but I figured I'd doublecheck.
So far, the front and rear ($110 / $40 respectively) mounts are totaling to $140. Does this sound about right?... Thanks for your help.

This was what I was able to come up with:
12311 BRACKET, ENGINE MOUNTING, FRONT NO.1 RH
12311-50021 1UZFE..UCF20 1 $121.80
12315 BRACKET, ENGINE MOUNTING, FRONT NO.1 LH
12315-50011 1UZFE..UCF20 1 $121.80
12361 INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, FRONT
12361-50100 1UZFE..UCF20 2 $197.28
12371 INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, REAR NO.1
12371-50060 1UZFE..UCF20 1 $69.37
12381 STABILIZER, ENGINE MOUNTING
12381-50080 1UZFE..UCF20 2 $32.45
12391 INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING FRONT, HEAT, RH
12391-50040 1UZFE..UCF20 2 $18.31
I believe the insulator engine mounting (front and rear No.1) would be what I need for the engine mounts (again, I'm assuming brackets don't need to be replaced?..).
I'm still having a difficult time locating the transmission mount. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Yeah.. for the benefit of those who were initially as uninformed as I was, this is what you need for replacing engine / transmission mounts on '95 - '00 LS400s..
12361 INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, FRONT (x 2)
12361-50100 1UZFE..UCF20 2 $197.28
12371 INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, REAR NO.1
12371-50060 1UZFE..UCF20 1 $69.37
The "Rear" 12371-50060 mount is alternatively referred to as the "transmission" mount. Perhaps due to its proximity to the transmission.. not sure.. in any case, I was confused as I kept hearing you need 3 mounts total.. 2 for the engine, and 1 for the transmission, not realizing that it really means 2 front engine mounts and 1 rear engine mount.
The total amount I paid was app $258 shipped. An independent shop says they are willing to change the mounts out for $250 in labor. so all in, roughly $500. not sure how this exactly compares, but presumably cheaper than going to the local authorized dealer..
