bi metallic strips are 2 different pieces of metal that expand and contract at different rates. Think of a thermostat.
It is needed for something to tell it when it is hot or cold.

aw thanks man. I believe it is part of the egr system, i looked in my manual but it doesn't show nothing on it.

When I deleted my EGR, I did also broke the fittings on that bi-metalic switch valve. I have since taken most of the vacuum lines off, so like you mentioned it is just an plug to hold the coolant in. I have not had any issues with this valve being unplugged, and the idle is controlled by the engine coolant temp sensor, so once it reaches op temp, it idles down like normal, and since I don't have EGR I don't need to tell it when to engage or not to engage.
