Default variation of instrument lighting problem

OK, I've searched threads and within threads but I can't find this particular problem:

When my headlight switch is off, my instrument lights work fine.

If I bump the headlight switch up to parking lights, headlights or auto (my default), my instrument lights don't work.

Anyone got any ideas (2000 model, btw)?

I need to revise my symtoms a bit. If it is daylight and the car is out in the open, the headlight switch works fine. If it is dark, or the car is under covered parking, the instrument lights work only if the headlight switch is in the OFF position.

Can a faulty light sensor make the instruments go completely dark?

I hope like hell that's all it is. I generally don't get that lucky.

Thanks for the response.

Well, it's official: I'm a dumba$$.

I swear I don't know how it got turned down...I'll blame it on one of the kids.
