Please note that these steps have been founded as a research in Google for starting problems & starter repairing. So if you want to save money and rebuilt the same starter then at least you can try the following steps.

Thing to do as a first step on diagnosis starting problem:-
1- Tight battery connections.

3- Check battery power with voltmeter



4- check alternator ( if battery is dead then their is a possibility that alternator is weak and not charging the battery, if alternator is weak then there is a possibility that steering wheel pump is leaking fluid above the alternator, so check the steering wheel pump also then, these problems are common in LS400 as I had read in forums

5- Bad ground wires maybe as I had read; it may also cause starting problem, check trunk lights wires or see this post & search in forums

Then if still problem not solved then try to replace starter motor carbon brushes as a second step, if still problem not solved then try to repair the other parts as well, search in Google.

My 93 LS400 didnt Start Last Night
with No Warning all I got is the Loud Click Sound
and My Radio/ Headlights work Fine
so I think its the Starter,

Search landed me here.

'98 GS400 with about 95K miles made the click sound and failed to start. I am going to eliminate other possible sources of the problem, but it seems likely that the solenoid is acting up. So I am getting ready to order replacement parts

Q: New contacts are pretty obvious. What about the plunger? People who have done the repair, did you find the old plunger in usable state. Can I turn the plunger 90 degrees and get fresh surface? Or the plunger randomly bumps around and there is no noticeable wear on it.

I know the fail safe position would be to order the plunger ... but ... the parts cost starts being comparable to reman starter [I assume the motor brushes, armature and bearings are all serviced in the reman]. I intend to stick with Toyota/Lexus

the only pats you really need to replace during a basic rebuild of the solenoid are the contacts and if necessary, the plunger. Total price for those shouldnt be more than $50-70 at LIST price.

I would check battery/alt/cables before considering the starter....
