Default DIY: replacing starter plunger / contacts /diagnosis all IN one //photos inside

Please note that these steps have been founded as a research in Google for starting problems & starter repairing. So if you want to save money and rebuilt the same starter then at least you can try the following steps.
First of all if you are having starting problems then please first of all check this link
http://www.aa1car.com/library/us1296.htm
http://images.google.ae/images?um=1&hl=ar&ei=-fWVSYPjLoqa-gbY5dz5CA&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=starter+motor+solenoid&spell=1

Thing to do as a first step on diagnosis starting problem:-
1- Tight battery connections.
2- http://www.google.ae/search?hl=ar&q=clean+corrosion+battery+cable&meta=
3- Check battery power with voltmeter

4- check alternator ( if battery is dead then their is a possibility that alternator is weak and not charging the battery, if alternator is weak then there is a possibility that steering wheel pump is leaking fluid above the alternator, so check the steering wheel pump also then, these problems are common in LS400 as I had read in forums
http://www.ehow.com/how_2283281_test-car-alternator-power.html

This is the power steering pump

5- Bad ground wires maybe as I had read; it may also cause starting problem, check trunk lights wires or see this post & search in forums
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls400-forum/408498-she-wont-start-plz-help.html

When you are having starting problem, where you hear click sound without engine starting, then it would be great if you try to replace the plunger + starter solenoid contacts as a first step of repairing the starter check these post here

How to remove starter DIY check these posts

Then for repairs steps check these posts…
Attention:-
(WHILE TRYING TO CHANGE PLUNGER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOOSE THE SPRING OR SMALL BALL AS THESE WILL NEED TO BE REUSED).

Then if still problem not solved then try to replace starter motor carbon brushes as a second step, if still problem not solved then try to repair the other parts as well, search in Google.

Next are photos of UCF20 LS400 2000 model starter assembly. Maybe you can refer to these photos in teaching the other owners & members of the forums. Have fun and hope that you get a solution for your problem!

Great contribution to all Lexus V8 forums. I remember replacing the contacts on the starter of my '98 LS. Brings back memories. Thanks for sharing.

Note: Guys, dont quote all the pics when replying... thanks.

Search landed me here.

'98 GS400 with about 95K miles made the click sound and failed to start. I am going to eliminate other possible sources of the problem, but it seems likely that the solenoid is acting up. So I am getting ready to order replacement parts

Q: New contacts are pretty obvious. What about the plunger? People who have done the repair, did you find the old plunger in usable state. Can I turn the plunger 90 degrees and get fresh surface? Or the plunger randomly bumps around and there is no noticeable wear on it.

I know the fail safe position would be to order the plunger ... but ... the parts cost starts being comparable to reman starter [I assume the motor brushes, armature and bearings are all serviced in the reman]. I intend to stick with Toyota/Lexus

the only pats you really need to replace during a basic rebuild of the solenoid are the contacts and if necessary, the plunger. Total price for those shouldnt be more than $50-70 at LIST price.

I would check battery/alt/cables before considering the starter....
