Unhappy Help a newbie: Is starter worth the $$??

My grandma bought me a fixer-upper 91 LS400 w/ 120K miles. Just learned it needs a new starter, which will cost approx $750-900. Problem is, there's no way to tell what else (if anything) is wrong with it. Can anybody help identify best/worst case scenarios or common pitfalls for this make/model? Trying to decide if the starter is worth the investment. The diagnostic already cost me $80. This is a recession. PLEASE HELP!

do it yourself, spend money on some tools and the parts, then break yourr DIY virginity and go get elbow deep in your motor.

Do some investigation around in these forums and you will most certainly see that the starter is MORE than worth the money, that is if you want it to run. LOL!! Sorry,, couldnt resist. The starter change is probably one of the most feared jobs on an LS however once it is out of the way, provided that the starter you purchase is not bad, will last you a VERY LONG time. If you are tool savy, then you can save some money and do it yourself, otherwise it would be best to make friends with a mechanic that you trust and who knows what he is doing.

Thanks! Not sure if I'm ready to get under the hood, but I'll figure it out. I appreciate your advice.

Yo, what is the actual issue? is the car not starting? because I just went thru the whole DIY starter deal an it sucks but can be done. Check your battery and alternator because my issue ended up being my alternator...check everything you can before going for the starter...
