my '90 LS400 with 100k+ on it now has a problem. the mileage clock stop working. anyone know how to check or fix it?

If you are talking about the odometer, the one in the 90 LS I used to have failed at about 125,000 in the late 1990s. I had a shop replace it for me -- I think I paid about $100 parts and labor so replacement must have been fairly simple. Failure of the mechanical odometers on the 90-92 LS400 seem to be common. Attached is a photo of what a gen 1 odometer looks like.

Here is a photo of the box my replacement odometer came in -- has the part number on the label. I think the same odometer was used in a number of Toyota vehicles.

how can you easily change the number on the odomoter? Mine broke at about 50k, and my new one only has about 37k miles on it.

Hmmm, I thought that 92 was the last year for the analog odometer in the LS -- guess I forgot.

It's not supposed to be easy to roll the odometer mileage backward or forward without causing obvious damage to it. It's designed that way to prevent fraud.

If your odometer was replaced by a professional, the mechanic should have stuck a sticker on the driver's side door jam stating the mileage at which the odometer was replaced.

When my 90 LS400 was rear ended in summer 2000 ($10,000+ damage), the adjuster missed seeing the odometer replacement sticker on the door jam and went ahead and authorized the repair of my car. I found out later that the adjuster would have "totaled" my car if he had realized its true mileage. Since my car otherwise looked like new, the adjuster assumed that the replacement odometer showed the true mileage and that my car had only about 25,000 miles on it instead of its actual 150,000 miles.

The day ofter my 90 LS400 was crashed in 2000, I visited the local Lexus dealer and looked at a new white 2000 LS400 Platinum Series car assuming that my white 90 LS400 was going to be totaled by the adjuster. My wife wouldn't let me buy the 2000 LS hoping that the adjuster would authorize the repair of my 90 LS.

The 2000 LS400 Platinum Series I bought used in 2003 was sold new in 2000 only three days after I looked at an identical car at the same Lexus dealer. I suspect I bought the same car used that I wanted to buy new three years earlier. Even if it's not the same car, it makes for a good story.

I know I'm bringing back a 1 year old thread. But I have the same problem. Does any one know how to replace it? I would much rather do it my self than spend too much to have it replaced.

i ended up replacing the whole cluster as i couldnt find the odo only. it would be around 200 bucks widely available on ebay. better get a reman one, will look like new

My odometer died on me with 183,699 miles on the clock. Using the information and picture above I called the dealership in order to purchase a new odometer. Yikes! The part alone was $255 bucks! I figured I'd wait a while before replacing it.
