1989 LS400 Vs. 2009 LS460
20 years! Wow Lexus has comes a long way. The new LS is just absolutely beautiful and very powerful. As we can not afford the newer LS460. However, the 1989 to 1997 LS400 is very affordable. How can we the owners of the classic LS compete with the newer LS? I really dont think we can. The 8 speed auto is just too awesome. However, we can have some fun with our historical cars. The figure I come up with (5.2L stroker with high compression pistons 12:1) yields about 350 bhp. I wonder with good intake, high flow exhaust, cams and valve will propel the classic to late 300 range. What do you think?

There is a LOT more in the 460 than horsepower
The truth is no one can make a 10 year old car new by adding some new parts.

Can you run pump fuel on 12:1 compression?
Im an old school cast iron v8 man, They highest we can get is around 10.5:1. I assume the alloy contruction would retainless heat and would be better suited to higher compression is that correct?
Any links to more information on this 5.2litre stroker?

I was trying to install the 1URFE (Engine from the 2007 Toyota Tundra). It is a HUGE ENGINE and lots of cutting for the tranny tunnel. Not worth the work. However, a high compression 5.2L will be direct bolt on.

That motor is huge. I bet the LS460 tranny is an equally huge combo too.
I'd still like to see some baseline dyno numbers for simple mods: muffler removal, cat back, header, intake, head porting. Let alone OS valves or altering cam profiles for lift-duration... What is stock...~60HP/L, the second gen bumped it about 64HP/L on factory numbers. I'd think there is room to grow with some engine management tuning.

Do a search on the web and I sure you can find it. 5.2L with high compression will be very fun. Especially for a cruiser like the LS400. Tons of torque.

Well not just power, but the LS460 has so many refinements in the interior, that are just impossible to install in an old vehicle.. and trust me, I tried.
I did a brand new full leather interior, build new door panels to accomodate larger speakers, rewrapped the door panels when doing so, bought a wood grain shifter. It's still tough to get that plushness in your interior after so long. I came close though
