i dont personally know the guy selling it or anything about the guarantee on the compatability for this JL to replace the stock, but if i had the money, id give it a shot. a JL sounds pretty damn nice to me!
im a huge udio guy myself, so when i read this thread subject, i had to check it out. however, as fae as the ls400 goes, not really much need to do audio upgrades. maybe a nice sub and amp in the back, but make sure you get the right head unit as well. i would never recommend high bass for our cars, we must keep it classy! =) just enough bass to keep your head bobbing is all you need. im a huge HIP-HOP/Rock kinda guy, so the sounds got to be perfect for that type of genre. and our cars are not near bad to satisfy with the stock setup. IMOP. but to each their own.
Hey everyone, I have a 98 LS with factory nav. I was wondering if it's at all possible to swap out the nav unit with a non nav unit? So as to keep all the climate stuff. Thanks.

I know this has been asked, but i've seen conflicting answers:
The 98-00 use 5-1/4 inch speakers front and back, correct? ( as opposed to 4" all around pre-95). I would want around 50watt RMS, 2ohm, component for front and 2-way for back, optimally, right? I don't want to mod or dremel the speaker slots.
i no that for the 1st gen Ls400 the speaker size is 4 inch but i have heard that some ppl have been fiting larger speakers. does any1 have any pics and can explain how/what you did to get them to fit
hey kidoekid, i put 5 1/4 speakers in all 4 doors (alpine), im putting 6x9 pioneers in the rear deck with a p2 rockford 8 inch sub and a kenwood ddx712 double din head unit with a kicker zx700.5 amp...all of which will be professionally installed by my gf's brother in law who builds custom enclosures and installs stereos at a shop...this will be done correctly and tastefully....total cost will be around 1500 dollars, all my components are comming from sonic electronix
I have 5 1/2" focals all around, pioneer head unit, a 4 channel amp, a mono sub amp, and an Alumapro RX12 sub. It sounds so good! I am still amazed at how much sound this car holds in with the windows up.
I took out the stock 8", and threw in an Alpine Type R 12", in a sealed box, with an Alpine MRP-500 Mono Sub Amp. I ran an RCA wire to a simple volume switch and mounted it in the little change holder left of the steering wheel, so I can boost it at 50Hz. It absolutely slams, and I only spent about $650.
Not to mention it sounds better than the system I built in my old car, which had 2 Kicker Comp 12's, a punch 225.2, Eclipse separates, alpine v-12 4-channel, full farad cap...
I'm pretty big into audiophile-level audio in a car, so when I pick up my own LS400 I'll be sure to contribute as much as I can to this thread. I noticed there is a particularly weak level of knowledge regarding proper deadening technique. It seems like most just assume slapping some "Dynamat" in is all it takes. Not so, of course.
I look forward to contributing in this arena as much as I can, and hopefully I can make it easy to follow.
Got tired of the cd changer skipping when the road was bumpy and I also wanted some new functions like handsfree so I got a new aftermarket stereo installed last week. It was a Pioneer dubbel DIN unit called FH-P80BT (think it's called FH800BT or FH8000BT in the US) last week. The dash kit I used are from Metra and a bought it from Ebay. Did loose the factory sub but I'm going to install a aftermarket amplifier and replace the factory sub with a DLS OA8. The new stereo works great. The sound is better and with more punch then the original system even without the sub. And it is really great not to having to change cd's in the changer all the time. Has routed the USB cable to the armrest storage compartment and has a 8GB USB stick there. And it is also very neat with the headset functionality. Every time you starts the car up your phone pairs with the stereo.
Below are some pictures on the stereo installed in the car.
And finally a picture on the microphone placement
If anyone wounder is the GPS bracket from Pro-Fit.
I put in the same a while back and I also like it. I like how it looks it is not so busy and blends with the dash. I have to agree with you totally on the audio quality of the stereo with out the sub, it does sound good. Like you, I also have to put in a new aftermarket sub in. I haven't figured that out yet how I want to run the power source and cables. I did the same with routing the 8gb pen drive to the center console. Its awesome not having to put in cds and sounds really good. Occasionally I connect(bluetooth) it to my EEEPC 1000he and play music that way too. I do like the bluetooth handsfree telephone on this head unit. It sounds clear and connects instantly with the phone. I like how you routed the mic. I think I will have to move mine to that location. I like your gps mount. I was wondering what to do with mine. Thanks for the pics. Looks pro.
blaupunkt vc100 tweeter in stock location thanks to a hole saw and 3m double sided tape. i also have an mb quart 8" sub in the factory location but the install still isn't up to par so no pics yet (will update). some retarded "tuning" via the factory hu and its starting to sound decent even with factory mids (faded to the front 100%).
i was going to do a much nicer system but i think i'm gonna sell the ls.
