Can anyone tell me does the factory rear subwoofer have some sort of baffle or cover on it or is it a free air subwoofer with the magnet exposed. I have a 91 ls 400 with the subwoofer removed by previous owner.

So if I wanted to put an 8" sub in the factory spot, should i put a free air sub so it can sound good.

Yea should be fine. I Personally run 2 12" kickers in the truck in a ported box and removed the factory sub to allow the air to move up into the cabin. Ive seen guys custom fab subs to fit into the spot where the factory one use to be also.

Just some options/examples.

I just went to Best Buy the other day and told them that I have a 1992 LS400 and what speakers do they take. The guy looked in his computer and said 5 1/4 in the front and 6 in the rear. That doesn't sound right to me though because I thought on here someone said it was 4" front and rear? It's too cold outside for me right now to rip the door panels off can someone answer this for me?

its deff 4" front and rear. i put 4" infinity kapa speakers in my 94 Ls400. But like others have said you can fit larger speakers if you do a little custom work.

Thanks. Now I'm glad I double checked first or else I would have just wasted money.

just grab a dremel and you will be able to fit the 5 1/4 no problem. or the easy way would be the 4 inch.

im a huge udio guy myself, so when i read this thread subject, i had to check it out. however, as fae as the ls400 goes, not really much need to do audio upgrades. maybe a nice sub and amp in the back, but make sure you get the right head unit as well. i would never recommend high bass for our cars, we must keep it classy! =) just enough bass to keep your head bobbing is all you need. im a huge HIP-HOP/Rock kinda guy, so the sounds got to be perfect for that type of genre. and our cars are not near bad to satisfy with the stock setup. IMOP. but to each their own.
