Its really weird i replaced the thermostat about 2 months ago and i thought it was bad because my temp gauge went all the way to the red and just today it did that... bought a new thermostat and put it in and ive noticed going uphill the temp gauge goes up but it stays mid range while idling...

anyone have any suggestions?

first bleed the coolant lines to make sure you didnt leave a massive air bubble in the system

a friend had the same problem, try flushing the radiator.. his was all clogged up

Check also between the A/C condenser and radiator. An accumulation of leaves or other things falling between these two will reduce airflow. The given that the rest of the cooling system is in proper order.

RA40 is right where I was headed.
Have taken radiators out of all 3 of my families LS400 models & each looked like they had been thru a flood with crap adhered 1/3 up the radiator.

Check the basic stuff first - bleed coolant, make sure your coolant is adequate, check radiator, check fan sensor/switch (on the bottom of radiator), make sure fans come on, make sure there are no coolant leaks.

If all else fails, then its most likely your water pump, or worse yet, headgasket.

have a radiator shop look into the radiator and check the tubes to see of caliclum has built up inside of it if so you will need to replace the radiator this is what most people find when after replacing the thermostat. Also like the person said open the bleeder valve next to the thermostat to see if you have an air bubble. if your radiator is full of junk rust calicum etc just repace it flushing is a waste of time due to the junk will not move. Any good radiator shop will take care of you and do it honestly.

is that what causes a milky-green sludge that i have found in some vehicles deposited throughout the cooling system?

A lot of time the calcium build up will cause the milky green sludge but another thing that causes that is worn out antifreeze change your antifreeze every two years at a radiator shop let them flush out the system if the calicum is to built up they will let you know.

I'm having the same problem. My 93 LS400 is running hot. I've replaced the water pump, thermostat, fan clutch and had my radiator flushed. It's still overheating. Could it be the head gasket is blown? Is there a way of telling if the head gasket is blown?

Maybe it's not overheating. What does your gauage show? Do the basics that have already been mentioned here. Also make sure your serpentine belt isn't slipping. Check that your hoses are hot. Make sure your coolant is mixed to proper ratio and use distilled water only. Most likely an air pocket.

Signs of blown headgasket,,white smoke(not condensation smoke) at ALL times while running. Pull the oil dipstick,,,if you see antifreeze and oil mixed together, most likely blown.
