Question Oil Viscosity?

I bought my 96 LS 400 with 78000 miles car now has 109000. Question is I don't know what kind of oil was in it before I bought it now sounds like valves are ticking I use 5w-30 halvoline do you think it might have had 10w-30? I had the 90000 mile service done already! Everything was ok! I'm thinking I need thicker weight?

I use kendall synthetic 10w-30 (dealership recommended). Anyhow, using synthetic is important.

The valve ticking is normal on the 90 to 94 lexus my got so bad I had to have the dealer ajust my valves which did quiet them down but it cost $885.00 it takes 7-9 hours to do the job. They also found a huge build up of carbon in my air intake and cleaned it out and the car now runs like a rocket. I have been using mobil one synthetic oil since 1985 in toyota's and have gotten 429,000 miles out of the engine and transmission power steering and rear end all using synthetic fluids the damn stuff seems to work. I now have 205k on my 91 lexus using all synthetic fluids and so far everything working perfect.

I just changed my oil, running 5-30 Royal Purple, no abnormal sounds.

But my car only has 66,000 miles.

Thanks. I will be running non syn, as I run syn in my other cars, but I am an original owner on those.

This LS has 117K miles, 95 model. Been running 10w30 previously.
