really, show me where in the manual.

i can give u several sources from withing both owners, repair, and maint. guidelines.

not to mention the dozens whove run regular ATF and had MAJOR issues on this very forum...

just read your owner's manual- it states the type of fluid it needs. simple ATF. and do NOT power flush it, which can dislodge particles into the solenoids, etc... just a fluid exchange, which any competent shop (including a decent valvoline shop) can do for $80. there is no truth or logic in thinking an abused xmission will be hurt with new fluid-- except for the power flushing above.

done mine twice this way- completely fine. it's the fluid the car calls for!

jc
see my post in the other topic...

the manual states Toyota T-II (now T-IV) fluid in the trans, and regular ATF (dexron/mercon) in the PS.

Not to spam in this thread or anything, but I can get the genuine Toyota T-IV ATF for $7 per quart. I don't know if that's a good deal or not, but just putting it out there.

Terrible deal. I've always paid in the $4.xx range.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. That's what I get for getting my parts through a middle-man. Haha.

The OEM Toyota T-IV is made by ExxonMobil and it's also called ATF 3309 and can be had for $3.50 a quart...

i agree with puredrifter, you can only use T-IV ATF. when i first went to autozone, they told me that toyotas use only that fluid. they recommended me not to buy any of the stuff they sell there.

its only a few bucks more and plus, you don't have to change it for a while, why compromise your tranny to save a few bucks???

and the manual only tells you to use T-IV fluid as well!

Many, including myself, have also used Amsoil ATF (ATF is the product name) with great success. It is more expensive, at $9 per quart, but it is also a synthetic product.

By the way, it's called 3309 because it meets the JWS 3309 specification. Any ATF that meets the 3309 spec should work with all Aisen Warner transmissions that require either T-IV fluid or fluid meeting the JWS 3309 spec.

total cap. for a 1LS is ~8.3L.

basically u drain+fill then run it for a while to circulate the fluid then repeat.
keep doing that until fluid comes out red. normally u need around 10-12 and maybe even 14L of fluid.
That link on lexls.com is for a 1st gen. I have a 2nd gen '96. How similar are the two procedures? Can I basically follow the 1st gen tutorial and figure it out?

Thanks!

I also think another reason why is because Ford and GM are buying Aisin trannies for a few models, and Volvo/VW/Audi are also using Aisin trannies.
