Default Since youve owned your LS...

what is the first thing that has broken down or had to be replaced? Being the most "dependable" car in the world doesnt mean that some wear and tear items might go bad, (i.e. tires, pulleys, belts, etc.).

The only thing that has let me down in the 8 months of owning this car is the battery. It was a genuine Lexus one, but who knows how long it was in the car. The year and month little dots were never marked at the dealer.

trans mount, random filters, oil, trans fluid, trans solenoid+harness (somewhat common on 98-00 LS4 and GS4), battery (replaced OEM Lexus, as in 8 years old...), coolant hoses (ends corroded since previous owner didnt use toyota fluid....), and front pads+rotors. need to replace some other stuff but it isnt wear+tear.

Things I've replaced:

by choice for peace of mind/preventative maintenance: timing belt (long past due), spark plug wires (longer past due), spark plugs(longest overdue), distributor caps/rotors, fuel filter, air filter, rear pads (done w/ fronts just because), PCV valve (still rattled, but like 3x the weight of the replacement, definitely the original)

because of minor symptoms: water pump (minor coolant leak), idler pulleys (noisy idle), coolant reservoir (minor coolant leak), heater control valve (not replaced yet, sitting in my trunk, but a very minor coolant leak from it), motor mounts (serious vibration at idle, my fault for trying starter trick to bust crank pulley loose)

because of major symptoms:
front rotors and pads (there were no pads left), driver's window motor (motor failure), wheel locks (the key stripped while I was changing a flat ), hood struts, battery

and i also had a rear main seal leak that came with the car, it went away after the first oil change when I switched to synthetic (before I even drove it home).

This is all for the period between 129-133k miles that I have owned the car, and most everything i replaced was original (down to the plugs and wires). through service records I've discovered the o2 sensors were replaced in '01 and the pump/rack/pinion were replaced in '04.

I knew about all of these issues before I got the car, so it was priced accordingly ($1,500), took about 2k in parts to fix for $4,500 of indie quoted work (the quote included dash panel $1100, coolant tank $400 and window motor $700, so that's why it seems so high).

Nothing.
THe only thing that broke once were the Horns, they just died, dont know why.

I am not countring Timing belt, motor mounts and trannt mount, brakes, those are wear and tear things, like tires.

My 99 LS total so far:

1) Timing belt change, plus all the extra stuff they change during this service.
2) Rear main seal blew, my God was that expensive!
3) "O" ring dipstick gasket thing.
3) One engine valve gasket.
4) Turned the rotors.
5) New tires, Go to Costco or Sam's Club for best prices.
6) Was going to get hood struts until they told me how much, they said $400.00 !!! With a straight face, incredible. I'll prop it up with a stick.
7) New windshield, not cars fault, actually my dad was driving when it got hit.
$1500.00 for a Lexus OEM windshield, but Insurance paid for all of it except
$250.00, my deductable.
8) Tranny mount.

Would a Ferrari be cheaper to maintain??? I wonder

David

hah, keep dreaming, even a 5k mi. service (and you do have to go to EVERY 5k mi. service...) costs upwards of $4000.
(for a 360...)

I've done nothing other than basic maintenance (tires, oil changes and etc). I've got my first timing belt change coming up next week
