Default update on clunking noise

I've been trying to chase the clunking noise for a while now..

Things I've changed:
rear axle carrier bushings
upper control arms
front sway bar bushings
rear sway bar bushings
4 struts

I was getting ready replace the lower control arms and outer tie rods. But.... I took it to my suspension guy today and he said that he tightened the subframe mounting bolts. He said that some he tightened 3/4 to 1 full turn.

So far the car is really quiet and no clunking so far. It's been vastly improved.

So I guess I won't need the lower control arms and outer tie rod and will put them up for sale in the classifieds section.

Just wanted to pass along this information to help others who are chasing the "lexus clunk"

Nice!

Just goes to show you some of the more simple solutions are the answer. Maybe we should preface all advice with make sure the mechanic checks all the torque specs on the bottom of the car. (Can be quite lengthy) -- Or can do it by feel, as yours did ..

Yes, an out of torque spec sub-frame connection could definitely cause such a noise, especially with some miles and that type of problem would only get worse with time due to the motion of the parts. Some subframes are welded.. I would have thought it would be factory welded. Interesting.

Nonetheless glad to hear it!

great post...i'm also trying to fix that cursed clunk in my 99. I think I may need lower ball joints and stabalizer bushings, as well as the strut bar cushions I already have, but I'll definitely get my mechanic to check that too.

Is that the only term for it: subframe mounting bolts? Want to make sure my mechanic is familiar with it, i had not heard of that before.
