It's supposed to be inspected at some interval (not sure if it's 90k or 60k), and adjusted if necessary.

What are the symptoms of a poor valve adjustment?

Sonyman, perhaps you can answer this..I vaguely remember you being a mechanic or something.. when people say they need to get a "tune-up"... WTF are they talking about?

I'm not sure exactly what is "adjustable" about our engines. Pretty much everything is managed by a combo of sensors and the ECU. How do they "tuneup" the car? Becuase I want to tune mine up

I'm not a mechanic, just a hobbyist like the rest of us.

The only symptom you or I would notice without disassembly would be a ticking noise coming from the valves. It's harmless, and very expensive to correct, so most people opt to ignore it. Additionally, noisy fuel injectors can sound very similar, so in many cases there is nothing to correct in the first place.

On our cars, a tune-up by my definition would consist of replacing the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor rotors and distributor caps. Of course, I would also ensure that all fluids and filters have been changed according to the recommended maintenance intervals, and if not, I would go ahead and take care of them at the same time.

So there's no worries if you're fuel injectors are making that noise? Mine are and it was freakin me out for a while, heh And if is not really a problem, would it be worth it (both cost and time/labor) to get it to stop ticking?

Try cleaning them through the fuel rail. That's all I would personally do for now. If they ever become a real bother you can remove the injectors and have them professionally cleaned or replaced, whichever is deemed necessary.

The owners manual REQUIRES the valve clearances on all 32 valves to be PHYSICALLY (not audibly) CHECKED every 60,000 miles. Proper clearances enhance engine power, fuel economy and engine life.

One fellow on this forum ruined his engine by ignoring the ticking noises coming from his engine caused by a wildly loose clearance on one valve.

I have a 1993 model with 163,000 miles. I plan to re-condition the car from engine to suspension. I heard an 1990 model that ran very quiet with no valve noise what so ever.

About 5K miles ago I replaced caps, rotors, plugs, wires, and both ignition coils.

It was worth it. I shouldn't have to touch that stuff for a while now. Wasn't cheap, but I don't have too many other maintenance items to do regularly.
