Hello all,. here I am back to this forum exactly 20 months later.. my car start clicking again,, my starter is out.. is this possible ? I rebuild the starter 20 months ago., but never replace it with a new one ! I just changer the plonger and the 2 cooper contacts , Now I am stuck. my car start after 4 to 5 click when the car is warm, in the morning takes sometimes 20 clicks , Today July 8 2012, it wont start at all. I am very frustrated. since I done the job before I don't trust any mechanic to work on it because I know somehow somewhere the will break or forget something I became paranoid. a Local mechanic wants $800 to do the works.. $450 labor and $250 starters plus may be another $40 for the gaskets !
I want t o do it again but I am afraid to be unable to remove the bolts that attach the lower EGR to the manifolds I need your support all !

Man, I feel for you. My initial thought is maybe you are getting too high of a voltage drop to the starter. I'm not sure how accessible the wiring is between the starter and battery, but if possible you should check for flaky wiring first visually and then by doing a voltage drop test while cranking the engine before condemning the starter.

What did you find? I'm curious. Getting ready to replace the solenoid contacts on my 93 ls400 in the next couple weeks.

IMO I think you should just replace the whole thing since you are already in there. You get a better warranty with a new starter than new contacts. Good luck!

You are braver than I am. Paying a mechanic was the way to go for me. Hope it works out for you, but I also suggest just getting the entire starter since you will get a warranty on it. Unless you are on a tight budget, been there before to.

I'd just get a new starter and change the solenoid/plunger & contacts + end cover and field frame with the new one......
leaving the old starter housing assambling to the engine, so one wouldn't have to remove the 2 "evil" bolts.
