New to the club. Been reading it awhile and was convinced that a lexus is a great buy. Recently purchased a 95 ls400 with 153 000 km( about 80 miles) from an original owner who had it dealer maintained for its whole history.
My mechanic told me it needs a new rack and pinion system(though I feel nothing wrong with the steering.
I need advice on the rear bushings and arm links. I was told the whole thing needs to be replaced to the tune of about 2000.00$$!(labour and taxes included).
The car also has a slow ,but small power steering leek. What repair should I attend to first? Other than that the car is immaculate -picked it up for 5000.00$! Any thoughts on this? Oofer from Montreal, Canada.

HUmmm, i thought LS400 has power steering and not rack and pinion steering.
Thought front wheel drives has that. Anyways i too will need front arm links. Been hearing knocks when i hit pot holes etc. Two A arm links are already
$800 alone. Most dealers will try sell you the whole assembly but all you need are the bushings. I found a place who sells the front set bushings for $99. and
instructions how to install them. I own a 93 LS400

The bushings that are probably bad are the trailing arm bushings and rear carrier bushings. LPDauto.com should have polyurethane bushings for $35 each set. You can do them yourself and save a decent labor charge. There is a tutorial on this somewhere. Don't replace the whole thing, you don't need to.

Welcome to CL - if you indeed have a leak you should attend to that first. The reason is because the PS unit is situated above the alternator. If left leaking it can foul your alternator.

I hear clunks when i hit small bumps on the road. Which bushing do i need for those? I would hate to replace those that are not worn. Eventually i realize i will need to replace all of them but kinda short on cash.

Welcome to CL. As Steveski stated, attend to the power steering leak first. It truly can foul up your alternator.
