the factory suspension is going to give you the best ride. people don't realize that the factory tires are part of the suspension. it's all tuned to work together. the engineers designed the suspnsion to work with a certain size (large) sidewall for best ride quality. tires soak up much of the bumps in the road normally. once you switch tires to a low profile performance tire, you don't get that effect any more, as the tires are no longer soaking up bumps. now it's all on the suspension shocks and springs do something they weren' t designed for.
not that i'm advocating that we all run grandpa factory tires, but for ride quality, that't eh best way.
p.s. my car rides like ****, but i dont' care, it looks damn good!

Agreed - there is no comparison to the way my LS rides now that it is lowered with wide rims compared to OEM. I prefer a smooth, cush ride also but we all know it is not really possible with a lowered set up so we sufer and have a cool looking LS

I have/had 20's on my 1st gen LS and current 1st gen GS. I don't have any problems unless I hit a major pothole. I prefer 35 series tires over 30 series for more cushion. Yup, cheap rims and cheap tires will be bad. If you really need a change maybe 18's with 40 series tires will help in a softer ride.

and for what its worth my car does not ride that much worse
OEM 15" sawblades with michelin symmetry touring tires to IS350 18" with general exclaim UHP 40 series tires...
the tiny little bumps in the road are evident now but the big ones are basically not much different.
i do have factory struts/springs with 140k on them though so if i were to put new ones on i'm sure it'd be quite different haha
