Default Hello there, new owner of an old 94 LS400

hello to all, a new member here.
Picked one up last week. 1994 LS400 with 76000 miles on the clock. this LS400 has one of the best exterior and interior condition among all the ls400s this age I've seen in the past few weeks (ran across a 93 with 56000 miles, supposedly traded-in by a lawyer's wife, but the condition wasn't as good as this one). exterior is almost spotless, interior leather shows some age, but no tear. and all the electronics work smoothly (well, not all of them, which I'll get to a bit later).
after owning it for a week, I did find something I wasn't aware of while test driving at the dealership. in the morning, especially colder morning. the dash won't lit, completely invisible from sight, speedometer needle and tachometer needle does move accordingly to the speed, but temp guage and gas guage don't move at all. after about 5-10 mins, the needles started flicking, then the entire dash board lit up. and by the time I leave from work in the evening, there's no problem when ignited, only when starting cold in the morning. I've checked this forum before I made the purchase, so I think it's "normal" for 1st Gen LSs.
second, I've found under strict conditions: uphill, slowly accelerating, at exactly 40 mph, the tranny downshifts and makes this "washboard shattering" sound. which I've also found others reporting in this forum, no biggie then.

in my engine bay, I found this equipment (close to the intake) in the red cycle, to be inconsistent with the condition of the rest of the engine bay, the red paint overspray tells me it's been fixed, but without a repair manual, I don't know what it is, can someone point it out to me?
another thing is the front seats heater, the control lits when pressed, but I don't sense the heat coming up. I'll research how to fix it myself.
afterall, this is a great buy, best bang for the buck purchase I've ever made.

well congrats on joining the LS family, and for ur flickering lights...there is a sticky in the LS400 forum that explains about the bad capacitors. u basically need to open the gauge cluster and replace 4-5 capacitors and your set.

Congrats on your new purchase.
Very clean ... the leather on the steering wheel and seats looks
quite good for a 13yr old car.
Nice BBS style rims ... looks great against the gold paint.

You may want to check the driveshaft.

my 94 LS has no such thing in that red circle spot. I have nothing there.

Yours look kind of strange though.

What about some Lexol for your leather interior.

Deja Vu.

I just bought a 94 that looked identical to yours, right down to the WHEELS. Mine has (or had) the gold grill. I replaced the wheels with stock rims from a '96 and replaced the gold grill. The gold was too much bling for me but I'm leaving the gold F&R emblems for now.

On to your question... I believe that is part of the air suspension; the height controller to be specific.

(Shameless plug... the wheels are for sale if someone wants them. I think they are 16x7-1/2 and they will come with the lug nuts and center caps.)
