Default Oil Pan Gasket '91

Has anyone changed the oil pan gasket?

I have a 91LS400

How hard is it to change?

Do I have to use a silicon to stick the gasket?
Thanks

There is no gasket so to speak; the lower pan is sealed to the upper by Toyota FIPG, which is black silicone. It's a messy job but fairly straightforward.

Great so I don't have to remove the header or anything? The pan should either fall straight down or around the exhaust pipe?

Would the Black silicon from an autoparts store work just as good as toyota's
Any experience with it?
Thanks

I'm fairly sure you can remove the pan without removing anything else, although I've done the job on an SC400, not on an LS400. Any black silicone should work fine.

I looked at mine and it weeps a little here and there, but decided to just leave it alone. With the FIPG the pan will not just fall off. You really have to work to get it off.

question what is better. to use the black silicone for the oil pan gasket or to use an actual gasket that they sell for the ls400 in the car parts store. (felt pro)

neither.

go to a toyota dealership, buy some actual FIPG, and use that.

toyota never made an oil-pan gasket for the 1uz, only FIPG because its so goddamned awesome.

Good question. Seems like they all leak, including mine before I fixed it. Man, was it hard to get off. I've always used blue RTV and NEVER had a problem. Although, this is my first Toyota engine.

well I used the gasket. The trick to getting the FIPG off is to use a wire brush wheel attached to your drill. Came off like a piece of cake. Luckily most stayed on the pan and not on the engine. Lets see how long the gasket lasts.

because things get old

surely you're not implying that cork/gasket material lasts forever and never leaks

from looking at enough lexus ls400 and ls430 maintenance records I would say a lot of new ones leaked also. Plus the gasket is less messy.
