Question Problems Replacing Broken Antenna Mast

Bought a used '90 LS400 with antenna mast broken at bottom.

Looked at a bunch of threads here and on other forums, as well as web pages with tutorials regarding replacement.

The plastic draw cable is all gone as is 90% of the antenna. Sticking out of the fender is the threaded pipe the antenna goes to. Sticking out of that is what looks like the chewed up remains of the antenna, with some type of brass colored tube around it.

I've pulled and pulled and it won't come free which makes me wonder if it was never supposed to come out in the first place. I tried the AM/CD while on acc trick. I hear the motor and the stereo says "antenna."

But that little nub that's left won't come free.

Advice? Info?

Thanks,

Bob

You can either pull with pliers in an attempt to get the remainder out, or you will need to remove the entire motor assembly and open it up to retrieve the rest of the plastic toothed strip.

That's what I was afraid of.

The plastic is all gone. But I've pulled on the remaining metal with everything I've got and it just won't budge.

Could it be that he mashed the whole thing down into the motor assembly?

the antenna is retardedly easy to get to... pop some clips off and move some plastic felt trim in the trunk area and you're good to go.

oh and unplug the cell phone while you're back there.

Had the same problem a while ago. My motor was still working but the antenna did not go up or down. Bought a mast and did as the tutorial suggested with no luck. I ended up opening the motor and it was a mess to put back. Still I was not able to the get the mast to work. I wish I would have bought a replacement antenna on EBay with a motor and replace the whole danm thing for a few extra $$$$ .

Thanks, that was the first tutorial I looked at.

Has great pictures, just didn't quite answer whether or not I'm pulling the wrong stuff out of the assembly.

Thanks again,

Bob

I've pulled the antenna assembly off the car and pulled the "pipe tower" that holds the antenna mast.

Looking through I can see a "shelf" towards the antenna side of the pipe. Is that part of the assembly that should stay or part of the old, broken antenna?

I wanted to ask before I cram something in their to press it out.

Once again, the remaining chrome antenna and something made of brass or copper just won't come free.
