Default Something I noticed with the Jbrady intake/exhaust

For the ones who have modded their intake and exhaust the J-brady way (me going the Lexkost route on the intake) Have you guys seen good numbers on fuel? The car seems to be burning a little rich at idle but today on the road I set the cruise on 60mph and recorded an average MPG of 32.8!! I thought that was ana amazing gain from the previous 26.5...

Anyone else have anything like that?

Also...the mods seem to have boosted performance pretty well too. I ran a stock LS400 of the same year and went by him even when I started off late 2 cars behind him. I thought that was suprising because of my heavier wheels... He was ver suprised to see me passing him when he has the EXACT same car with 40,000 miles vs. 75,000 like me.

Don't get me wrong, I don't race the car...but I thought we would see if these mods really did anything.

Just some input on it.

Definitely not uncommon to see HP gains and MPG gains go hand in hand when freeing up an engine's breathing--one of the very few areas in life where you can have your cake and eat it too.

Yessir I did Lexkost's mod and saw a similar increase in MPG - not sure about performance but it seemed a bit quicker. Also it sounds better now.

I have the Jbrady mod with the headlight gasket removed for some more air and get 32-35mpg on cruise control at 65.. funny thing even at cruise at 70-75 its still about 28-32mpg.

The observed mpg was done on a flat highway sections I don't count going down hill or up hill .. up hills it would drop down to 21-28mpg but still good.

I can't wait to see what it'll get on my vacation to the Outer Banks this year.

Just my 2 cents.

Default Intake mod

i did this mod and got worst fuel economy. i live in florida and it's hot *** hell here with a crap load of stop and go traffic. maybe that's why i'm getting such bad fuel economy with the intake mod because it's sucking in all that hot air. I also made a heat shield surrounding the whole intake and took out the headlight seal, still no difference. Can it be that i'm running too rich? Sounds great though!

That is strange your MPG is worse as most others saw at least a modest increase. I live in Houston - hot and humid like florida. I suppose you could be rich. What do you average on a tank of gas? I drive 80 miles round trip to work and the majority is highway. I don't see anything above 26 MPG as an average but can go nearly 500 miles on a tank (stretching it). Some guys are seeing over 30 MPG - amazing. I would run a can of Sea Foam the next time you fill your tank to see if that doesn't help your situation. It is a $5 solvent at the auto parts store - helped mine.

How is everyone here measuring MPG? 30+ MPG is VERY difficult to believe. Seriously.

If you've lost MPG, it's highly unlikely it's a result of the mods. Something else is going on here. Freeing up engine breathing will increase peak MPG as a function of efficiency. The only way breathing mods alone lower MPG is if your foot is deeper in it more often due to the improvement in the way it sounds/feels! (And again, even that is not a pure function of the mods themselves)

Just to throw some #'s in. On my un-modded '97. We just did a 450 mile round trip run and at 118K miles, ours will get 24-25 MPG. Best was 27 MPG on flats. So freeing up the breathing on the 95-97, a nominal improvement would be 27-29 MPG. The VVTi in the 98+ along with the tranny, 30-32 MPG seems reasonable. (Dependent on your foot too. )

Good job guys!

pls remember that most of us posted 25+mpg are in later model cars, with the 1UZ VVT-i motor which is MUCH more efficient than earlier models when driven with a judicious right foot

Ok, so I didnt go down a crazy hilly road, but it had some nice up and downs. I didnt get the video because I realized that I left the card for my camera on my desk so I had to take a picture with my Black Jack.

It's not my best, but enough to prove a point...
