Unhappy I feel like I've failed her...

So I decided to check out my air filter for the first time since purchasing my car back in January.

Needless to say from the pic, what I've found is not a pretty sight.

When I pulled that filter out I said some words that my parents wouldn't approve of.

Worse yet, I decided to head over to the local "Canadian Tire" aka Crappy Tire, for a replacement. As expected it is not kept in stock... . So I decide to get a price quote on the one they can order in...$65ca. I almost crapped myself.

Not willing to just accept that I call up the Advance Autoparts in Lewiston just across the border... They had Purolator filters for...$18. WHAT THE HECK!!!

Anywho...a bit more good news since then, finally got the caliper bracket for my front brakes. I've had a stuck sliding pin for 3 weeks...well I discovered it 3 weeks ago.

Stealer price, $177. Wrecking yard price, $30 WITH 2 sets of brake wear sensors thrown in for free. (These sensors are $89 each at the stealer by the way). Clearly the wrecking yard did not know what they are worth.

Finally, I got a speeding ticket for $285 about 2 weeks ago. Cop with the laser said I was going 138kph when my cruise control was set to 120kph.
Paid the ticket online the day after. Yesterday I get an email saying the payment was rejected by the county office.
Call them up today to find out the ticket was cancelled!!!

Apparently the cops have 7 days to file tickets and after that they can't file them at all! Saves me $300 and 4 points off my license.

So this has been an eventful day for me...but about that air filter...let the bashing begin...I deserve it!

Wow, I found something else I love about Canada, besides Kristin Kreuk.

Happy to hear the ticket was dropped. That's some money there.

That filter isn't bad...mine has been worse after several runs to Vegas (sand) and dirty-dusty areas. Oregon was by far the best because of all the rain...not much dry stuff got sucked in.

That doesn't look that bad. Depending on how dusty the area you live in, the filter can get that dirty or worse in just a few months. For a while I thought you were going to post a picture of a black air filter

Also, after blowing it out w/ compressed air, make sure you rotate the cleaner side of the filter up to the inlet

believe me mate, that's not too bad. When I buoght this car, the prev. owner hadn't done jack for maintenance, and the filter was a dark grey all around, with what looked like oil caking part of it, as well as various insects embedded in it. Needless to say, when I replaced the filter, the car was suddenly far more responsive, the engine sounded better, gas mileage improved, etc. Yours is dirty, but its not so bad you should be slapped about with a large trout or anything.

That filter is better than most I've seen. I'd replace it though. One of my buiddies changed his air filter on his truck not too long ago and it was black, with all kinds are oily resedue building up...yuck.

That's crazy...
I really thought that that was horribly bad but I guess there's always worse!

I know it's the worse I've ever had on any car I've owned.

Update on my braking problem...
Replaced the caliper bracket last night so the stuck pin is no more. However, it definitely seems like the prolonged contact from the old pad because of the stuck pin has warped the rotor.

Headed back to Advance Autoparts in NY to get a sensible price on it (though Napa in Canada seems pretty good). I love living 5 mins from the US border.

Question for those with experience...
The o-rings on the tips of sliding pins...what is their actual purpose?

I've noticed that they seem to be the cause of the resistance that I have in the pins on the other side of the car.

Only other possibility I thought of is maybe I need to do a better cleaning of the bore in the bracket (i.e. the hole itself that the pin slides into).

Any thoughts?
