Default Brake Light on...Stop Lamp out? 92 LS400...

For the past few weeks, I noticed that the brake light on my dash was going on and off dimly. Now the light just stays on.

I also noticed that the stop lamp (located where the subwoofer is) used to turn on when I turned my headlights on. Now, it only lights up when I am pushing the brake pedal. Do I have a wiring problem or a bulb problem?

My brake fluid is topped off, and I don't have the parking brake problem.

Thanks in advance for help.

To the best of my knowledge,, the third brake light is only suppose to come on when you DO push the brakes. I would check the wiring in the trunk area to see if it has gotten pinched or broken at all. It is pretty common to have a pinched wire or one that shorts out due to being exposed and something metal hits it. The wiring I am referring to is located on the left hinge(facing forward from rear). Just pry the black protector off and check the wiring; my guess is that a wire got pinched in this area and it a really common problem for our first gens.

I was unclear. My HMSL would turn on with my headlights, and brighten as I pushed the brake pedal.

Now, it only lights up when you step on the brakes (it's dark, even when I turn the headlights on).

Is this normal or is something wrong with my wiring?

Ok, I checked the trunk hinge. Looks like somebody already did that fix...the light is still on.

Every time I press the brakes, I hear a clicking sound coming from the inside compartment near the gear shifter...

...the lights in the back all shine bright, none dim or dead.

Any other guesses?

Also a question...on 90-94s, does the brake light turn on when you need to get a brake job soon (like a wear sensor) or is it only for brake fluid level/sensor and brake lights out troubleshooting?

Supposedly when the light comes on (little orange circular looking warning light on dash) its too late - meaning your pads have worn all the way down and will now damage the rotors.

I don't have the orange circular light. Its the actual red Brake Light.

I have a 92 LS400 BTW. I've checked my bulbs, wiring, and brake fluid level, I'm just wondering if this light is designed only to come on if you're low on brake fluid or have a damaged bulb. Does it also turn on when there is excessive brake wear on 90-94s?
