Default 1997 LS400 Starter Trouble

My dad's 97 ls400 starter is acting up. Either it works perfectly fine or it clicks and nothing happens. Proceed to turn key back off and on and will either once again click or work just fine. Really random but does occurr frequently. Wonder if anyone has input. Dealer ship wants $1200 Canadian to do the work. They say its necessary to take off the intake manifold to get to it?

please search

starter is dieing and needs to be replaced.

yes, the intake manifold does have to be taken off since the starter is in the intake valley.

labor at a dealership is VERY expensive, better off finding a good independant to do the work.

Thanks, I always search , just wanted some input to see if anyone else has some personal experience. I tried cleaning the batter posts today, started up fine twice, no cicks. We'll see how it goes....
