Default Need opinions on 235/50/18s

Tirerack recommends 235/50/18 for 18", but most of the posts I see in the search archives suggest 225/45/18 or 235/45/18. Tire calculator shows the 235/50 will be 1.4 mph slower at 60mph. Whereas the other sizes are +/- .6 mph.

Does anyone have 235/50/18s on their car and would like to share their experiences?

This is for a '98 LS400.

I dont think I would run a 50 sidewall just because the tire might look too tall for the rim.

the best tire setup I've used for 18s is 245/40/18. I'd go with Continnental Supercontacts. or the Toyos. Goodluck

With Persian...245/40 or 245/45-18. I've been thinking of a 255/40-18 if it is available inthe tire I like..

Love my 235/45/18's from both a handling & looks perspective.

You may want to check the tire specifications of each tire you are considering individually instead of relying on the size calculators.

There are slight outer diameter differences among manufacturers in the same size tires.

Depending how agressive an off-set your wheels and how low your car is, you'll want to check the sidewall profile. Some squarish sidewall taies may be prone to rubbing.

You would be very surprised by how much increasing the outer diameter of your tires even a litlle bit effects your launch from a dead stop.

An LS400 is a big heavy car.

Smaller sidewall = a more harsh ride. Tires are part of the ride formula. The few times you use the firm sidewall handling doesnt seem to equal the loss of smooth ride, day to day, over time. If you are only driving short distances or smooth roads it doesnt matter as much. IMHO.

I just went up to 245/45/18s from 225/60/16. The ride got a little rougher. But the size of rim makes the car look better.
