Default LS in the cold

hey guys i just picked up a 1992 LS400 with 72,400 miles on it not too long ago. i was wondering how well these cars do in really cold temperatures .

I live in North Pole /Fairbanks Alaska and during the winter months which will be here very shorty its common to be in the -50F below range for weeks or months at a time.

what breaks on these cars at these temperatures?

im going to winterize it shortly with a battery heater, oil pan heater, engine block heater, purculater heater, card board in front of the radiator

friends car this past winter, that was the high for the day too

ill try to get a pic of my car up but its nothing special, Yet.

am i the Farthest north member?

Hello,

Where did you buy the car? If the car has never had a winter in those temperatures I'd make sure your coolant mix is right. I'd look into an optima battery if you're going to be replacing it.

Will the car be outside 24/7 or do you have a garage for it at night?

im in the North Pole/Fairbanks area but i got the car from Anchorage ak which is about 400 miles south of me and the winters down there are very mild compared to Interior Alaska. the people who had it before me were an older couple in their 60s who always had it parked indoors. i got a steal of a deal for it

Unfortunately my Cabin didnt come equipped with a garage but it does have running water :P

i usually run either a Optima or Orbital in all my cars and run on average about a 80/20 mix of anti-freeze-water

i guess ill be CL's cold weather tester

Hello,

Personally I think it's better to keep the car in the elements all day once it gets that cold. Things break when it sits outside at -45 half the day then in a garage that's 30F. Not to mention rust can't make much progress in temps like that, when people put a car in a heated garage they just give opportunity to rust.

I'd make sure your door latches have some grease in them. Please keep us posted on how the car takes the cold.

grease wont work well if at all at that low temp. best thing for locks and latches in extreme cold is graphite powder.

Hello,

I don't see -45F constant temps, but I do see -30F temps a few times a year with wind chill. Depending on wind and how it hits the doors I've had to get ice out of the latch itself.

I don't really see how graphite is going to help the latch in situations like that. The grease is just there to displace snow/ice.

u use the graphite mainly in the door seals and locks because it cant freeze and dispels water. grease can freeze.
