Default 1998 Coolant Drain Plug Locations

Hello,

I've found quite a bit of information on how to locate the drain plugs for the '97 or older V8's but nothing on the '98 or newer. Several remarks were made about the newer engine being different but not really in what regard.

I was hoping someone could give me some input on how to fully drain the coolant.

Thanks in advance,

James

Pure Drifter,

Actually I haven't yet. Last time I was under the car I forgot to look. Hopefully if my day works out tomorrow and I'll have time to get under it and see what I can do.

One would think it would be similar....

Thanks,

James

**After checking it is the same with exception to the hex bolt on the top side of the engine, block drains are the same**

There is another on the passenger side near the engine mount. The one on top your thinking about is actually a large hex bolt which you'll find if you follow the lower radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine. Personally I wouldn't mess with the lower coolant drains on the engine block, just because you run the chance of damaging the threads on the block (especially if it's corroded) and your looking at some major repair. I simply drained the radiator and that's it. Don't forget to buy a replacement o-ring for the radiator drain, I reused mine only to have it fail a week later.

Hello,

Just an update for someone searching for this in the future...

The Toyota diagram does not call out both of the engine block drains but they are indeed there. You really need to drain these to get all of the coolant out, more than half of the coolant came out of the engine block drains.

The bolts are 10mm and if you have a long extension ~12" you can get to them with ease. I don't know how people do it without the extension, my hands aren't that small.

Hope this helps someone down the road.
