I seem to remember some tutorials on how to fix this problem on this forum and lexusownersclub. When this happened a few years back on the 90 LS I used to have, an independent Lexus repair shop fixed it for about US$190 including about $21 for a new "seat back transfer bar".

Here is some info on how to fix the problem without replacing the part: http://www.cureline.net/lex/howtos/info_seats.htm

actually guys i have a better fix: its a pain to fix and wont break and will cost about 0.62$ i took my rod out and mine was not plastic like i have heard, mine was alluminum, so i took this rod to a metal shop and and my buddy said he could make a replica out of steel but it wouldnt be cheep so he noted that the rod is splined all the way through so he told me to cut the shaft in half, flip flop the rod so the place you cut is reversed so you have fresh splines to but on the gears then put a solid piece of steel inside shaft where the grooves are worn out and then drill a hole through it and put a small nut and bolt through both sides of cut then wallah. I havnt had a issue since and i was tired of doing quick fixes on this problem. you have to take the whole seat out and apart and remove and replace the rod.Ii only wanted to do this once. the major problem with this rod is it is tooooo small there fore it has a tendancy to walk a half inch each way ,because the seat expands over a period of time. with cutting rod in half and inserting steel in middle of shaft i had a the chance to fix this by leaving a half inch gap where i cut the rod here are pics
Hope this helps fix this agravating problem

A new rod from a dealer is about $20. But on the other hand if its not available then this idea is very useful infomation indeed! Thanks PV
