Just purchased a '98 LS 400. When I back up and apply my brakes they will click. Just that one time. When I go forward they will click. It's like anytime I change directions they will click. Any ideas? My dealer is 3 1/2 hrs away. Oh, car has 32,000 miles and still under warranty.

I do not know,but once you hear clicking,it means that your brake pads need to be replaced,but your 98LS seems pretty new for it to need new pads but I do not know how hard you brake,but on the LS once you hear the clicking sound it is telling you to change you brake pads.

Johnson Lexus in Raleigh, NC told me that all Lexus brake pads are designed to move. However, as the pads wear they can move more which goes along perfectly with what you told me. I was sort of waiting on the "check brakes" light to come on. I guess that may be a little too long. I purchased LS from a lady in NY. City driving could explain premature wear? :eek:

The pads are shifting up and down due to the direction change of the rotors. Don't worry it is not a big deal and no harm is being done. I bet if you listen closely it is the rear pads making the click sound and not the front, due to the design. To remedy this for a while, remove the rear pads and coat the ends of them with caliper grease (liberally) even put some grease in the metal supports that the pads rest in. Reinstall. Careful not to get the grease on the face of the pad. This is a characteristic of ALL Lexus in some shape, form or fashion, esp. 96' ES 300's.
