1994 LS400 with 73k -- Good Buy?
I'm currently looking at one and it seems to be in fairly good condition. It shifts smoothly and runs very quietly. Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy it? Its right at the edge of my spending limit.

I just picked up my 1990 for $4300. It only has 99k on it. Runs awesome. Interior and exterior is immaculate.
I think I realized why I got such a good deal (at least I think so) on it. The previous owner did mention that there is an occasional puff of bluish/white smoke on a cold start. He made sure to put emphasis on the OCCASIONAL part. LOL! Anyway, once I bought it I realized that it was a lot more than he led me to believe and that it was more than occasionally. So I started calling lexus/toyota shops to get quotes on replacing the valve seals/guides. In the neighborhood of $2500-3000. I figured since I got such a good deal on the car then I could justify it.
My girlfriend did not understand why I would spend that much money just so it doesn't smoke. LOL! I told her if I wanted to drive something that smoked then I would have bought a Datsun. Well before I bit the bullet I decided to do some research. So I researched for a few days and found a couple things to try. I found a post about the Idle Up Valve in the power steering pump going bad at about 12-16 years which causes power steering fluid to be pumped or sucked into the intake manifold when the engine is shut down. I disconnected the hoses and ran it a couple days. Guess what? NO SMOKE!
So I sent the car into the shop to have a timing belt, tensioner/idler, water pump, drive belt, tranny service and the Idle up valve replaced. Oh and the idle up valve was only $103. I figure I can have all the major maintenance things done and still be on top a couple grand. And have a beautiful Lexus. Best car I have ever owned. Love it!
Just thought I would share.

Thanks for your story. In the end I purchased a 1995 LS400 with a tad under 75k miles. I finished the paperwork and now need to work on transport arrangements (the car is in FL). Although the deal wasn't too hot, its coming from a dealership and looks to be immaculate. I just want something that isn't going to have any unusual problems and put a smile on my face every time I sit in it. This car should fit the bill.

I paid 7700 for a 92 with 85K miles. I think its a great deal if you can get it for around 8500 but I would go under 9K. What else can you buy decently for that price? Not much compares.
