Default Leaking Rack & Pinion Section (93 LS400)

Recently had some major service done to my 1993 LS400 (165K).

Service technician at an independent garage (specializing in Toyota & Lexus) reported that there was some minor transmission fluid leakage in the Rack and Pinion under section of my car. He said. . .from his experience with early 1990's LS400s. . .the leak could not be stopped, only tolerated until I replaced the complete Rack and Pinion section (estimated parts/labor @ $1,200-1,400).

Is this true that the leak cannot be repaired. . .only by replacing the Rack and Pinion?

Thank you in advance!

hi thats too much for a sterring rack, rack can be bought for around 200 bucks rebuilt, check out carsteering ,com and its an easy DIY, if you areinclined to do it but ,1200 thats alot of mola also as soon as it leaks all your seals are brittle thats why no fixed for that unless you replaced them

Hello,

sure it is the steering rack? I thought mine was leaking too, but it was the valve cover gasket from where it dropped right on the rack. It could also be the steeringpump and hose! After I rebuild the PS and changed the valve cover gaskets the car is totally dry underneath.

Default Steering Rack + Labor = ?

A timing belt or water pump are also inexpensive, in terms of parts (<$200 each). . .it's the labor that's expensive. . .on a recent bill the pump ran me about 5 hours with a total bill of over $600!

How long does it take to install a reconditioned R&P Steering Rack for a 1993 LS400?

(I'll check on the other leakage possibilities later in the week.)

Thank you in advance!
