Default 1990 LS400 Headlight Bulb Replacement Question - HELP!

I was wondering if it was possible to replace the standard 65/45 Watt 9004 headlight bulbs on my 1990 LS400 with a pair of 100/80 Watt 9004 bulbs. Would there be any negative consequences? Could I replace the fuses with a higher ampere rating or something? Thanks a lot!

Can I replace the wiring harness to prevent that? Is that expensive?

im not sure on cost for Lexus but on my GMC Sierra it cost around 200. and that included a new headlight switch.Personally i would do a HID conversion kit that includes ballasts bulbs and harness ive seen them on ebay for around 200 to 300 and then you will get the light you want and the color you want. I put sylvania silverstar in my LS which puts out plenty light and gives a small amount of blue to lights

Exactly what joshnoel said. Just save up for HIDs and get it done the right way.

Just a note; aftermarket HID is illegal in most places so you should find out how your state is about that stuff.

Also if you search the forum you will find that the problem isnt really the bulb but more the lens. The light will still be a weird blob even with brighter bulbs. Not to say that HID wont be brighter...

Best bet is some JDM or european lenses but they will cost ya.

There is also a way to retrofit 9007 into the 9004 socket.

CHECK THIS OUT for that conversion

Calvin,

I suggest you search past posts on this issue.

I owned a 90 LS for almost 14 years. Yes, the headlights suck and there is little that can be done about it. 80/100 lights p1ssed off on-coming drivers big time - one exploded and it took a lot of work to clean up the mess inside the housing.

The lens on the early LS headlight is awful - creates a big blob of light. The only improvement I was able to make was by using 45/65 bulbs with a halogen/xenon gas mixture. They used to be available from GE (I have not seen them for years) and are still available from Wagner as "BriteLites": http://www.brandsport.com/wagnerlighting.html

I thought about importing Euro-code LS headlights when my 90 LS was new but was not willing to spend several thousand dollars for all the components, questionable results and voiding my warranty.

I agree with dfkd about aftermarket HID kits. The early LS is very sensitive to weight in the trunk and passenger load. Unless the lights have a manual or autoleveling feature, HID's can be very dangerous (blinding) for oncoming drivers. When I had my 90 LS loaded wlth luggage, the headlights mainly lit up the sky.

sorry for the bad news. I agree the early LS lights are a POS.
